    abs module rebuild question

Hi, ive been reading a few posts about resoldering the abs module? Ive got the usual abs and ebrake light flashing. I was wondering if anyone knows more about soldering the module to repair it? What exactly needs to be done? Any input would be much appreciated. thanks

the hardest part is opening the module up.....once you open you it will be able to see the solder joint that needs to be repaired... just take your time with the soldering....

I do this repair relatively cheap as a service to the audi community because as an owner, it infuriates me that Audi refuses to acknowledge this problem. It's more complicated than that. Opening the module up is by far the easiest part. You will need extremely steady hands, a microscope to do the repair along with very fine tipped /heat controlled soldering irons and special soldering materials. Email me for more info: [email protected]

If you've never done this repair before and are trying it for the first time, I guarantee you that you will brick your module. There is literally no room for error.

The materials I use nearly cost that much! My scope, irons, and tools cost me well into the thousands! Anyway point is, I'm not making any money on this. Maybe I am just overly paranoid about how I repair these things because they are so delicate. I put in a couple layers of redundancy. The repair usually takes me about 2 hours and I cover return shipping to usa/canada and warranty my work.

But I'm glad to see people not having to sell out a thousand bucks at the dealer anymore!

I would never say the solder repair is easy. It's pretty much impossible if you're trying to do it with regular pb-sn solder and rosin-core (I did it once, but I have years of re-work experience, and decided it wasn't worth the effort, so moved on to creating another solution). I contracted with a company that custom-made a special chemicals and solder for me to do the repair. I also typically re-inforce everything with a silver epoxy that costs $125 per ounce! Then I have some more costs in sealing and water/heat-proofing the module That's the reason I'm saying I charge $100/module and am not making any money off of this. I don't really see anyway to do it for less and have a result that will last.

I would not attempt this as a DIY without a lot of experience in circuit repair and a re-work station or at least some proper irons and a scope.

dude im not saying anything against you im just saying thats a 50/50 shot in getting it repaired that way. ive seen thosee modules go bad and not because of broken connectors. it does takes a bit of time. i know what involves in repairing those. i would say that you are actually under charging for this repair!

    Re: abs module rebuild question

I had mine repaired for like 125, so far so good. One thing I noticed is the location of the module. Its right next to the windshield washer fluid. So when you poor in refills its very easy to spill all over the module. I dunno if that would effect it over time, but im sure its seen it fair share of spills onto it.

    Re: abs module rebuild question

i tried to do mine,, and it worked, for a while, then failed again. There are alot of very, very tiny wires that you cannot break (or see) or you will have a permaABS light.

o, i know you can... It would not be very pleasurable to do, especially without the right tools.

is it the box under the rear seat or or the one in the engine bay that usually causes the light show?

    Re: abs module rebuild question

there is a write up somewhere, maybe on passatworld.com....that explains in detail how to fix it. there are two wires that connect the board to something (plug maybe) they both go from and to the same contacts, one of them can come unsoldered and cause the light show

I know how to solder quite well, but these wires...we're talking TINY. As in microscope tiny. Our shop sends them out to kompresd for repair. They always come back quickly and working! Great guy.

I tried to fix mine too, I struggled with soldering the wire then when I finally got it the iron slipped and tore one of the microscopic wires beside it. I had a magnifying glass, a decent iron and plenty of soldering experience, but it's just too risky unless you have the rights tools and tons of experience.

Good day sidespar, can you still do a rebuild for my ABS controller? And you cover the shipping back to Canada you said? I am in Nova Scotia!

Matt "sidespar" fixed my b6 module nearly two years ago and it has been flawless. He was great to deal with and incredibly fast turn around, had it sent out and back in under a weeks time. Thanks again.

theres 2 pretty small wires that break their connection. they are also surrounded by some very tiny human hair size wires. you need a fine tip iron, steady hands, and soldering experience.
