What brands do folks like? Looking for good price, of course, and noted that Blizzaks and (Dunlop) Winter Sports are well reviewed. Only concerned with winter drive, lousy conditions, have the summer tires for rest of year.

Gigi- Which tires did you get for your Jeep? I am thinking about putting some bigger rims and tires on my 1500 truck..

    Re: Snow tires

I really liked my Hankook Icebears last winter. I think I am going to order a new set for this winter and they are very cheap.

    Re: Snow tires

I got some Hankooks too and they seem fine. I drive on snow and ice for 5 to 6 months a year, so I have had my share of snows and gone through many a snowtire.

The blizzaks are good too, but noisy. I think the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4 or 5 is one of the best snowtires, but are a little pricey. I want a set for my rado, as I like to take it skiing unless the snow is really flying.

    Re: Snow tires

I've heard a few people mention that they liked the Icebears too. Personally, my car had a set of Hankook HPAS tires when I got it and they were complete garbage. I'm kind of leery on buying another Hankook product.

I ran a set of Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds last year. I ran them from October 1st 2007 - March 30th 2008. They were runined when I took them off. Only 4mm of tread depth left after two rotations. Roughly 13K miles.

I need to buy another set of winter tires but, my problem is that on dry days I cruise at speeds around 100mph and winter performance tires aren't very happy with that.

The one key to winter tires is that you really don't want to run them in temps above 50F. They get too soft and wear way too fast. I still think that the winter sport 3Ds were just too soft in general. I know people with Subarus that are getting 2-3 winters from a set of snow tires.

    Re: Snow tires

Daft - I got same warning about wear on Dunlops from mechanic. Thanks. But Tirerack claimed to be far & away as best treadwear. Hmmm. I see that "winter performance" and "snow" are separated by Tirerack as well -- less able to compare across categories (R vs Q seems only basis for distinction), but maybe Blizzak WS-60s are worth a try? Actually, I'm so impressed with General's Exclaims I may just try their (inexpensive) Altimax Arctics.

    Thanks, Daft.

    Re: Snow tires

I know that Nokian rules the winter. They are a bit more, but you get what you pay for. I am between the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (the newest dedicated studless snow tire) or the Nokian WR G2 (all weather with the severe snow service emblem) I know the R will give me the best performance in the snowy conditions but roughly half my driving is on mostly cleared roads (for Michigan) and highway driving. Such a toss up.

Goodyear ultragrip3 are great in bad weather. And they do pretty good on dry too which is a plus for me. Got a set for sale.

My Icebears were very happy cruising above 100mph. I actually left them on until I got new tires in the late spring and they felt no different than any other tire when driving on the highway.

    Re: Snow tires

I think I might go for the Blizzak LM-25 this time since it seems to last longer on other's cars and it's still a V-speed rated tire (149MPH). The Dunlop was too but, it wore waaaaaay fast for $150 a tire.

BTW, Tire Rack is giving out $50 AMEX gift cards on each set of (4) Winter Tires purchased through October 12th.
