ordering a clutch kit hopefully this week, few quick questions. (kinda long, sorry)

my stock clutch blew a nice puff of smoke over the weekend and its been getting noticably worse each day. i dont want to wait and have to pay for a rental for more than a day or two, so im taking out a loan and getting this thing done.

my winter project is either going to be a GTRS or GT28RS eliminator (will probably end up changing my manifold too for better flow). im debating between the stage 2 or stage 3 kit found here: http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shar...L=AWEClutchKit

i have a general idea of what numbers ill be looking at with both of these turbos, but it seems to differ by car/tune/dyno. basically, they say the stage 2 kit is rated at 350ft/lbs of torque at the crank while the stage 3 kit would be rated at 450ft/lbs at the crank. one thing i should point out is that i dont plan on having a REALLY agressive tune(sticking with revo). somewhere in the middle, because if i blow up my engine im pretty much screwed.

"so wheres the questions?" youre saying, right? basically, i want to know if the stage 2 kit would suffice for my future turbo plans, or if i should go with the stage 3 kit. sure stronger would be better, but if stage 2 will suffice i would rather use the extra $100 to ship the kit next day or something.

my 2nd question is that of the flywheel. i remember reading about 6spd transmissions with lightweight flywheels causing vibrations. is this something for me to worry about? or is it like 1 in 1000 cars that this happens to?

thanks a lot, sorry for the pointless essay. didnt even realize i wrote that much haha

Buy nice or buy twice. Go Stage 3 or better! I went Stage 4 Southbend from DTH and I would HIGHLY reccommend DTH and a Stage 4

Buy the best clutch you can, do it once because you'll want more power later.

thanks guys. i dont plan on ever going bigger than a gt28rs. i dont ever want to build my engine. if i were ever to modify my engine in anyway, it would be replacing it with a 2.7t BT. but that will never happen haha.

greg, thanks...i will IM you on aim.

I had Spec's 240mm(S4) Stage 2+ clutch and their billet steel flywheel.

The clutch held fine, with my K04, never an issue with the clutch disk or pressure plate.

However the lightweight billet steel flywheel(16lbs) had several issues...

Mad vibrations into the gearbox, and I couldnt shift from 1st-2nd at high rpms/load.

Plus my clutch pedal was on the floor!

Pulled it, installed SouthBends OFE HD, with the OE dual mass flywheel. Been happy ever since.

I have an OEM DMFW that needs resurfacing. I'll sell it dirt cheap. I can get it resurfaced next weekend if need be. I'll just charge you for the resurfacing and shipping.

Where are you going to get it from? Im in the EXACT same boat as you, except my stock clutch has not totally shit the bed yet, but it letting out its death cry very slowly.

Doug, not to rain on the resurfacing parade, but do you know if it is common for a flywheel to not be able to be resurfaced? As in too thin to cut? I was debating buying a used, already resurfaced flywheel to have just in case mine is too thin (though I dont expect it will be), but its a concern. I seem to see people post about buying new DMFWs all the time. I do have a local shop that does great work that can resurface it for me. Just curious about the wear statistics.

You know I completely blame you for my impending BT upgrade. I should have never got into that car, its going to cost me thousands. bring on the holiday sales!

You can refinish a flywheel up to a certain point, as you mentioned. If your flywheel is the original flywheel with the original clutch you should still have enough material to be able to resurface it.

The reason why my extra one needs resurfacing is because it sat outside for a long time and needs some TLC. Since I will be at ASP next weekend I can have them resurface it like they resurfaced the one in my car. I will not get it resurfaced if no one PMs me about an interest.

You know you want the power and were going for a ride in my car regardless. Whether you're in the mid 200awhp to 300+awhp the car is so much more enjoyable to drive and gets even better gas mileage than stock. That is why I recommend, at a minimum, a GTRS or equivalent.
