Re: ER SMIC Carbon Fiber Shrouds now available

    UPDATE 9-22-08:

Looks like Fred @ ER was expecting them to go smoother than it has when he told me to start selling them several weeks ago. Either way at least the people that have bought will have a set locked in from the first batch One side is ready to be fully produced at 5 units per week. They are having to make adjustments on the other mold for the other side. So as soon as the other mold is finalized they will start shipping. I know our group of buyers (JHM) should be 2nd on the list. So as soon as they are made they will be drop shipped straight to you.

Here are some pics I received this morning from Fred @ ER of the one shroud ready to go. They look sick.

How easy/hard is it to replace shrouds? Are there bolts involved or how are they clamped in? I don't remember when I put in my ERs.

You got to remove your bumper again so they can be mounted securely flush to the cores. Not sure on the details of fasteners yet but I am sure it will be nice, since it is coming from ER.

Re: ER SMIC Carbon Fiber Shrouds now available

I have a suggestion for these.

include some rubber trim along the back of the shroud, similar to door or hood seals so that you can press the shrouds tight to the intercooler and still have a fairly airtight seal even if they move around slightly as the motor moves. Plus you dont want carbon fibre rubbing and vibrating against soft aluminum.

figure out something like that and you got a sale.

I already emailed fred @ ER regarding this once I saw your post. I didn't bother asking him what if any hardware / gasketing he will include or not include originally since he always seems to build a good product (but takes a while ;-) )

It wouldn't be hard or expensive if this concerns you to take some hose and cut a slit down it (down the whole length) and slip it over the edge of shroud or some kind of weatherstrip material that slips on which it would simulate. I will keep you posted.

the stuff they use on the X1 intake to seal it to the hood would be ideal.

Just like I assumed. Fred @ ER has this covered.

    FROM FRED DIRECTLY
    Jason,

There will be rubber stripping that will be attached to the edge of the shroud. Having bare carbon fiber rubbing on the face of the intercooler core will eventually cause damage.

As for mounting, I want to reuse the OEM clips that are on the OEM shrouds and use the OEM screw. The customer would have to drill a hole into the shrouds to mount the clip and reuse the OEM screw. Every SMIC that you have sold has a shroud bracket. Once I get the shrouds in, I want to check to see if this mounting system is feasible. If not, we may just use nut/bolts to mount the shroud to the bracket. The bracket is the flat piece on the side of the intercooler with 2 holes in it.

    Regards,

    Fred Su

I would have paid the same price for plastic over carbon fiber just to get them quicker. I only care about the function. No one is going to see these things. I'm sick of driving around without shrouds. <sigh>

k ill put my order in at some point.

sounds like its all covered nicely.

I like many others have hacked my rad support to hell already, my "timmed" stock shrouds are just screwed to the rad support,

The OEM clips are LONG gone.

I hear ya. Yeah, unfortunately I am at the mercy of what ER decides to do. I think he went with CF since lately everyone dogs on crap that isn't made of CF. Also after talking to him about it, it really was not going to cost much more pure unit.

Gotta love the German performance market, driven by carbon fiber this, carbon fiber that. He was just following along most likely, otherwise some of these "engineers" would write a 2 page thread about how much better carbon fiber is than what ever he chose. Just my .02.

I can always source the oem clips if anyone needs them or get them the part numbers to order them from their local audi. Since it is usually like pulling teeth to get them to look up something as complicated as some random clip.

lol. Same here. I didn't even remember the OEM shrouds had clips... it's been that long. I had RS4 IC's before my ER's, so my rad support and fender is all sorts of cut up haha.

Re: ER SMIC Carbon Fiber Shrouds now available

So had a little time today so I decided to troll the forums.

BTW, thanks to everyone who has supported us by getting our SMICs!

The idea of plastic shrouds was explored and deemed unfeasible. Plastic injection molds are VERY expensive especially something this size. Only feasible if we had quantities in the thousands to make up R&D costs. Unfortunately, I wish we sold SMIC's in the thousands. The only option for low quantity was fiberglass/carbon fiber. The molds cost the same between fg/cf. Our actual cost was very small between FG and CF. This is because the CF is "wet" and is constructed just like FG, just with layers of CF weave. With the small cost difference between the two, the final retail pricing would be negligible. Now, with the choice of pocketing extra money or offering a nicer end product for customers, we chose the latter. When you guys see the size and complexity of the shrouds in person, you'll realize that the retail pricing is crazy cheap. In fact we're selling it at near cost to dealers to pass the savings on to existing customers.

I apologize for many who have been waiting for a long time for the shrouds. Unfortunately for us, we do not have the capabilities to do composite work in house. Therefore, the shrouds had to be outsourced to another company. We have gone through many headaches trying to find a company willing to do the shrouds at our target price point. The few we did find who were "willing" to build the shrouds took forever and drag us along which finally declined to build the shrouds as they did not feel the profit for them was worth it. Without direct control of the project and at the same time basically begging these companies to build our shroud, the project lingered on and on. So the current company we are working with finally has shown some progress and it looks like we're not far from getting production units (albeit still slower than I'd like).

You can see the shrouds when they're on the car. If you notice in the pictures, the exposed weave is on the inside of the shroud. When you look into the side grill openings, you will then see the CF weave.

As for mounting, using the OEM clips is not necessary. I wanted to use the OEM clips for a cleaner install. You guys can use a small nut/bolt to secure the shroud to the shroud bracket on the SMIC if you're missing the OEM parts.

Great!! You can do mine next, after you install the ICs too!

Srsly though, I wouldn't mind if you could give me a hand with the hacking whenever they finally come in; since Tony insisted you are THE go-to guy for the ER IC installations.

Haha, I can help out. Just depends on when you're planning on doing it. I've been pretty busy on the weekends lately Oh and we'll need to do it somewhere with air tools (likely need a die grinder for the pass. side frame rail).

I've got something in the works. It is very likely we'll do it on a Saturday morning, but that's TBD until I actually get the ICs. I'll keep you informed though. Probably do a Hooter's run afterwards too, maybe even get Tony and Dave (if he's at EPL that day) to go also.

I will look into it. I would assume the shrouds wrap like stock. So worst case there would be some trimming needed.

I believe I've met you before, I used to work at DD. I'm not in that area of the state very often any more though. I've always been much more of a lurker on the forums, especially here. My car is sorta stage 3-...I don't know if people would consider K03/K16's as stage 3. I appreciate the offer for help though.

Only 2 - I'm about an hour and half away. But I like Mike so I'll still make the trek out to lend him a hand ;-)

DUDE...don't you know that I don't really live there any more? I don't think Rocky Hill is that far from you.

Haha, yea I know you're up this way now. But you said you'd try and get Dave and Tony to go out after, so I figured we'd be doing it somewhere down there.

Good catch; I was thinking that you could just meet me at the apartment and I would do the rest of the driving from there.

Just let me know when those ER's come in and we'll figure something out :-) I got to get down to EPL sometime in the near future and install W/I and a cam adjuster. So maybe we could do eveything at once.

Re: ER SMIC Carbon Fiber Shrouds now available

Not sure as I haven't installed the shrouds on an RS4 bumper. It's only been test fitted on a S4 bumper. However, as Jason has mentioned, you can just trim the shroud if there are issues. The intercoolers will fit a real RS4 however. There are a couple of RS4's running around with our SMICs.

The shrouds are built from the OEM S4 Shroud. We molded the OEM shroud and made a set out of fiberglass. We then modified the fiberglass OEM shroud copy to fit the new SMIC's. This lets us keep all the contours like the OEM shroud to make sure everything clears and give you a factory fit. We then gel coated it and made another mold of the new modified piece. That final mold is then used to build the carbon fiber pieces.

Re: ER SMIC Carbon Fiber Shrouds now available

UPDATE 10-27-08. Just got word last week that the final prototypes are done and will be test fitted this week.

We should start shipping the sets from people who already bought in the coming soon and if anyone wants to place a new order, order up now in my store to keep from missing out on the first shipments.

Thanks and I appreciate your patience.
