At which point will we get a Low Engine oil signal??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When the dipstick is below the "C" mark, or when there is no oil at all on the dipstick? At which point the sensor kicks in and decide to give out the Low engine Oil signal?

    Thanks.

    lol :)

No seriously, am not asking for the hell of it, its because I need to know when to expect it to do that, so I can have an idea when to call the dealer so they can take it in.

I am thinking when the engine is missing 1 quart, but not sure.

if you look at your oil pan you will see the sensor at the very bottom... its at the lowest of the low, i wouldnt wait for it to come on... usually when the light comes on its too late..

He's asking because he thinks he has a sludge issue and wants to keep enough oil in it as to not hurt the motor in case they decide not to warranty it.

my oil light keeps coming on(the light just says "oil"). I just got my oil changed and I have checked the dipstick multiple times. The readings always indicated that it was full, maybe even too full. Would too much oil cause the light to appear?

Re: At which point will we get a Low Engine oil signal??

Yep, I would never want to drive with a drop less of oil. But dealer will only take my car in if Low Oil signal comes up or I do 1000K, which ever happens first. Dealer also insisted I dont add ANY oil in the mean time, and if the dipstick is empty or I get Low Oil signal, then I should call them (they will probably take it in instead of waiting the remaining 1000KM.) So ya, thats why am asking when the Low Oil will kick in.

    Too late?

Logically, and I hope am correct, the Low Oil should technically kick in when there is 1 to 2 quarts missing... its LOW oil, not NO oil :)

Not sure what Audi decided to do though.

I called the service manager there, he said 1000KM OR Low engine Oil, whichever comes first, they will take it in. He insisted not to add add oil even I get the Low Oil sign, and thats why I was asking at which point do we get that warning.

Right now am below the C mark. Wont be long before my dipstick is outta oil.

I get a low oil warning on a pretty regular basis and there is always enough oil. Guess the sensor is screwed. Oh well, it can stay broke.

Would a faulty sensory throw a vagcom code?

And to the OP that has to be one of the most retarded things a dealer may have ever said in regards to fixing a car. I've read your posts too, they seem like idiots but I'm sure you already know that. Good luck and I hope they have to spend tons of money to fix your car if it runs out of oil...

I'd get that recommendation in writing from the dealer so that when you grenade your engine, they can't go back and say they never said to drive the car with almost no oil in it and refuse to repair it or stick you with the bill.

Re: At which point will we get a Low Engine oil signal??

FYI. I had the yellow low oil indicator come on this week . . . I was due to change my oil anyways (a little over my usual 5k interval). After I changed the oil I dumped the old oil into plastic bottles to take to the recycling center and came up about a quart low.

It was at the bottom of the crosshatched inidicator section on the dipstick.

There are multiple oil indicator lights. The yellow one with the dripping oil can saying low oil is the best to have of them. The worst being the red low pressure indicator, in which case turn the engine off immediately. There is also a indicator for a faulty oil level sensor. I've never seen this one, but the first two I have at some point.

Re: At which point will we get a Low Engine oil signal??

Thanks guys, I totally agree. I am actually monitoring the oil level very closely every day, its not dangerously low yet. But before it even gets to that point, I am going to do exactly what you mentioned: Request a written document from the dealer saying if I run with the car to get the remaining 1000KM having too little to no oil, I am not responsible for the engine in any way afterwards. Thats it, after that am happy to run with water in the engine, I care less.

I called Audi Canada today, told them about the situation. They will contact the dealer to see if there are other options to take it in and get back to me.

    Couple of questions:

    1) IF Dipstick is COMPLETELY out of oil = how many missing quarts is that?

    2) If oil is JUST below the "C" mark, how much oil will be missing at that point? Thats where I am at now.

    3) As far as you know, how much oil should be in the engine for it to operate safely?

    Thanks for the help!

Re: At which point will we get a Low Engine oil signal??

I have had my low oil light come on a few times in my car and had to add like 2-2.5 qts meaning I had like 2 quarts left.

when the light comes on it is not to late, like I said it has happened many times to me because my car was buring oil (worn out rings) and I would never check it (yeah call me lazy) and I would rag the shit out of the car too and then the light would come one and I would be like o shit better add some oil.

In my last car it burnt oil real bad too after I had it for like 5 years and that light came on all the time (I would go through 3 quarts in less than 3000 miles).

The car held 4 quarts and I had to add 3 quarts quite a few time to get the level to the full mark.

    Thanks David.

Its scary to think running our engine with only 1 or 2 quarts of oil!!

What was the problem with your last year's car? My car is burning oil at around the same rate: 1 quart per 1000KM.

just wore the rings out from revving it to redline all the time. And then revving it that high causes blow by of oil past the rings which is then burnt through the exhaust.

When I was at a dealer, a client came in with a Low Oil light on this 3.2L A6 and the guy at the service told him that the light comes up when there is 1 quart missing but that was for the 3.2L A6. IDK if it's the same thing for the A4 but it SHOULDN'T be too late when the indicator comes in because it's supposed to prevent, thats why it's there.

Thats exactly what you would logically expect, but I think people are getting the light when its missing between 1 to 3 quarts.. Hard to tell.

I cannot believe these F dealers playing with people engines like its some $100 piece... If a customer complains of high oil consumption, then check the damn car for them, dont be letting them run for 1000KM or run out of oil before you take the damn car in!! And then replace the cat and Turbo YET ANOTHER TIME!

LOW ENGINE OIL will light up when there is less than 3.0 (50% less) quarts inside.
