2.8 motor, noticed a huge drop in gas mileage. Fairly new plugs and filters, done at 70k. CEL isn't on. Got 92k on it, possibly the fuel filter, cats?

    Re: MPG loss!

The factors which determine how much fuel the ECU will grant is determined by the 02 sensors and MAF. I would start with those. Other factors which can decrease gas mileage is low tire pressure, exhaust leak, and the air filter for the intake. Not so much the fuel filter, if anything at all. If you have a VAG Com, see if there are any intermitent codes. They sometimes have them even you have no CEL. It can lead you in the correct direction. That if course if you really are losing valuable MPG. Because another major factor can be our freind we like to call Mr. Lead Foot.

    Ha ha! Love it.

Has anything been changed on the car recently that coincided with the increased fuel consumption? Did you forget something heavy in the trunk?
Maybe something is wearing out and you have increased friction for the motor to fight.
