I'm going to be giving Nokians a try this winter...I understand they're much better than blizzaks.

    Re: Best winter tire

I hear most common people swear by Bridgestone Blizzaks, I've had most of my friends who work at shops/dealerships swear by Nokians. Personally, I have yet to buy a new set of winter tires but I am on my second set of used Dunlop winter tires. In my opinion, any good winter tire (not cheap) from any reputable brand is very comparable to one another and have very similar performance. I love my Dunlops and recommend them, and I've been in friends cars with Blizzaks and Nokians and they seemed to be just as good as mine. Buy what you guys see the best reviews on and if you find sales

There are good reviews on www.tirerack.com but I don't think they carry Nokian tires.
    Ignorance is bliss.

    Re: Best winter tire

I have the Kumho IZen XW which where on my eclipse and were fantastic in the winter. Great tread left after two seasons. Going to mount them on my audi this winter.

Good traction on dry pavement, and not that much road noise.
    Plus cheaper then blizzaks.

    Re: Best winter tire

Any winter tire will be safer than not using them, or by trying to get by with all seasons. Beyond that oversimplification, you have to examine your needs, and not just choose a brand, "nokian" or "blizzak" for example. There are several tires made by each of those companies and the others out there. Some things to consider are how far you may have to travel in bad weather, how early you leave for work, how hard you drive your car, and whether you can wait to travel until after a plow comes around.

If you need to be able to be safer on ice, then you need a soft tire, and you have to be willing and understanding of the sacrifices that entails with dry handling. They'll repay you with as much confidence as possible on the very slippery stuff.

If it's deep snow that you're in, that may involve a different choice. Lots of cold rain may involve a choice with better wet weather tread pattern.

A balanced mix of everything might lead you to a tire that can do a bit of all these things, but is still a real winter tire. My choice here was the Nokian RSi, which I've found to be an excellent balance.

As mentioned, TireRack is an excellent resource, but they still stubbornly refuse to carry Nokians, recognized by many as the premier company in winter tires. You can buy them at many local retailers as well as online, though. A lesser expensive alternative to the nokians is the Hankook Winter iPike, if you're looking for a lot of traction and can give up some dry handling. It's also studdable, which may prove valuable in Calgary. My choice for our quattros has been either the nokian RSi (slightly more performance oriented) or one of the Nokian Hakka tires for a bit more hardcore traction (also very long lasting). Don't forget to check eBay and other car sites for used tires, have gotten some great deals from people moving to warmer climates, etc. Hope that helps a bit.

Winterforce are good snow tires. I have ran them in the past. Loud & squirmy when dry, but excellent traction in the white stuff. This is the best bang for the buck snow tire.

I have Nokian Hakka RSI-- Nokian tires are not cheap.

Checked out Tiresbyweb.com and spoke with Josh. He was more helpful than salesperson. They stock Nokian and offer FREE SHIPPING. From what I have looked at, looks like they have the most decent prices around. Again, with these tires, you get what you pay for!

    Re: Best winter tire

Pirelli Snowsport 240's have treated me well. Great overall winter tire I have found. Can hold its own in snow and good dry pavement performance. There also on sale on tire rack right now. Hope this helps.
