Ok search in the forums for vag com turns out a million non- vag com related questions!

Looking at playing around with one but have a few starter questions...

Which version do i need for an 04 S4 ? i have access to:

    409.1
    5.041
    7.041

And which cable do i need? Checking the compatibility charts on ebay and no mention on an S4 on any of them.

    TIA!

    Re: Vag Com question

Go to Ross Techs application or what to buy pages and you can see exactly what you need to get. Not sure what type of interfaces are on Ebay but you need a smart dongle to access most modules. The older serial interfaces only work on 2001 and older cars for most modules. You also have a standard OBD2 port for the interface. OBD1 ports were only on cars in the early to mid 90's. If you get the smart dongle, you don't need to buy a separate Vag Com license as the dongle will work with the latest edition of their software and can be moved from computer to computer that has the software loaded. I am using Version 805 for my 2005 S4 with the Hex USB.

    Re: Vag Com question

Having purchased ebay cables in the past, I'd suggest skipping this route. Although I had pretty good results with a cable from Obdtools.com (seems they're no longer "available"), it is definitely worthwhile considering getting a Ross Tech cable. The cable can be sold down the road to recoup the add'l cost and more importantly, you are able to do everything rather than just some tweaking and get full support as well as updates to the software. Also, working with the "name brand" cable/ software is easy compared to fiddling with software settings to make the cheapo cable work.
