Stealership quoted me $1,800 labor to replace my clutch!!!

i know the GM of sales at the audi here in schaumburg. he told me the clutch was $3k all said and done. so hellz yeah i'm going to a performance shop to have them put one in.

i dont know how much different the job is on a 1.8T but my dealer quoted me $1500 labor plus parts... i got a 30 pack and did it myself... time consuming but not terribly hard

According to my system, it takes a little less than 12 hours said and done. I have seen it done in 10, but that was hard on the service tech. Their rates are a little high to me

Today, the method is to buy OEM audi parts and send to Southbend. They then upgrade them to whatever you want. Southbend will be offering a lightweight flywheel in the near future for our car as well. That's all I know.

A local VW/Audi shop quoted me 10 hours labor to do it.

Also Southbend lists 4 different clutches on their website for the 4.2. I was told if you purchase a clutch from them they will machine the flywheel for free?

Yes they will do the flywheel for free or nearly free if you purchase an upgrade from them. When I talked to them they were unable to sell the clutch kits they had on their website for our car, as they could no longer get parts. They will tell you to buy OEM parts and ship them for an upgrade.

I'm going to end up paying about $1,200 for parts and labor for a new sachs cluth for my audi 2001 2.8 a4.

The story:

I was going down 81S in VA to visit some family, and since this was my first stick car I was wondering what happen if I switched to 2nd gear going from 80 in 5th (very stupid I know). The thing is I didn't engage the gear, I had the clutch pressed to the floor. But, I felt the clutch go back even further and it wouldn't come back up...

But anyway, I pulled over and started the car in 1. I was able to start and go and I got up to 4th. I pulled over again. Tried to engage but this time the clutch was responsive and looked like it had some pressure. I was able to switch into 1 but, the tach rose and the car went no where.

So right now, I'm stuck in winchester, VA. I took the car to a local shop. They want $1,200 for 10 hours of labor and a new clutch kit.

Today is Saturday and the car should be done by Monday. By how much am i getting ripped off?

Most of us aren't that familiar with the cost of the A4 parts since this is the S4 thread (there is one dude with an A4 that post in here constantly and he may be able to help you).

1200 doesn't sound like a bad deal to me for a new clutch in any Audi.

i can replace a clutch on an s4 in around 5 hours....but that doesnt mean i wanna get paid for 5 hours...wanna make 10 off of it......the way it goes.....unless u wanna take it to a tuner shop.....the trans on the 4.2 is very easy to remove..about the same level job as removing a trans from a manual 1.8l.....

You are pretty lucky that the clutch was the weakest link, usually its not, and you over-rev (destroy) your engine.

How many hours did they quote you and what is their posted labor rate? If their labor rate is $130.00 an hour then they are right in line with book time.

I was quoted 6-7 hours at Shawn's shop in Sarasota. You guys know Shawn...the guy in "Eurotuner" this month..page 52. Anyways, parts were $550...should be considerably less than the $2300 I was quoted at Audi in Tampa....
