    Will a 01 A6 2.7TQ MT ecu work in a 02 A6 2.7Q MT and vice versa?

I have someone who wants to swap ecu's and I was wondering if it would work.

I neep ECU part numbers to tell you for sure. There is a fair amount of compatibility between versions but, it's best to know for sure via ETKA. Get me the ECU part nmbers and I'll figure it out.

Even if the part number match, you're still out of luck. Reason being that all C5 cars started using the Immo3 system part way through 01. Unfortunately you can't simply swap ECM's for testing purposes without runing the immobiliser adaptation each time. Only people who can do that are the dealers and the very few indy shops like myself with the certified VAS 5052's.

What makes you want to swap the ECM's???

Well, My current ecm has the Unitronic stage 1+ software and I am going stage three and don't want to "write over" the programming and loose $600+. So I was going to swap ecu w/ someone. But he backed out @ the last min.

There's alot of places that can do the Immobilizer coding for you without a VAS 5052. You can also turn it off if you don't wish to use it.

That was how I was able to run a spare ECU on my ME7.1.1 car without needing the Immobilizer change.

It used to not be a big deal back when the dealers could simply request the SKC code through the dealer warranty network and if people asked nicely and provided the proper info, the dealer would often give out the 7 digit SKC codes. Now it's all done through the GeKo network and only "certified" 5051B's and 5052's can access. Certified meaning testers with currently registered E-Certificates installed. Actually, the 5052 has recently been discontinued, now their releasing the 5052A's. Luckily the 5052's are still supported. Thank God, I'd be real pissed if I ended up with a 10G paperweight.

Don't take this the wrong way or nothing and I'm not trying to be prick, .....but what do you mean the Immo system can be "turned off". That sounds like complete chinese to me. Or are you referring to having a tuning company delete the immo out of the ECM, so to say. Or maybe like permanently writing a start authorization message into the ecm, ....so to say.

I remember when I first read up on GeKo years ago and saw it as a major roadblock. With my older B5 car, I used to keep spare ECU in stock format to bail me out if my modified ECU were to fail. When I got my A6, I was concerned that I'd have to buy a spare ECU and program it via the dealership's program but, these Immo read/write programs are ideal for people who are in rural areas or want to maintain many ECUs.

In regards to disabling the immobilizer, you can actually edit the ECU's coding (in raw hex) to not check the cluster for immobilizer matching and allow the car to start regardless of the key/cluster/ECU combo. This can be reversed but, you will then need a valid immo code to make the car start again.

This is done via non-factory editing software.

As for the reading and writing of secret keys for the immobilizer system, there are tons of VAG specific cables/software for this exact task.

Here's is one example I grabbed from Google for you: VAG-LOGIN

OK that makes sense. I've heard of guys building custom stuff using VW components and having to modify the actuall software in donor ECM's. Do you know or recommend a particular software and interface package to modify the software for such tasks

As for the SKC code retrievel retrieval gadgets. Be careful with them things and their claims. The can work great when dealing with 4 digit login codes (actually five, just a zero added as the first digit). The problem with the 7 digit SKC codes is that it's not just the code, it also uses the date the SKC was requested, the importer number and workshop code (dealer code). All the various numbers are used as an algerithim to derive the original 4 digit code. That's why one 7 digit code would change every day. Sounds simply enough except for the fact that most if not all Immo3 modules will only accept the 7 digit login proceedure. Kinda worthless to retrieve the "real" 4 digit code as it's still worthless.
