I was looking at some stuff about Hurricane Gustav and found this picture. Being From California I can't even imagine the stuff the people down in hurricane country are going through.

Shit, I've lived in FL my whole life. I can handle a little wind and rain because I know it's coming. I have time to prepare. What I can't imagine is how you people in CA deal with the freakin' ground moving to the point it knocks down overpasses WITH NO warning.

The way I look at it is that it's been almost 20 years since the last big one in my part of cali, and before that it was 82 years between quakes so I really don't even think about it. This may sound nuts, but as long as nobody gets hurt and there is no real damage, earth smaller quakes are kind of neat to experience.

Even a small rumble would make me shit and piss myself at the same time. Anything up to a category 2 or 3 hurricane and we throw a party and get drunk.

I slept through Andrew when it went over Miami.
I just depends on how close you are to the ocean also. I'm about 10 miles inland and all we had was flooding up to about knee level and that's it.

Besides, you get enough warning (days ahead) to start planning if you need to pack up and get out for a vacation somewhere else.

I would take an earthquake twice a century then a 50% chance every year a hurricane makes landfall..sorry. Plus our buildings must be kept to a higher (or different standard) than your..ours are earthquake proof..your are wind..

But >7.0 you never really know

as for earthquakes... i used to live in california... i agree, they were pretty cool to experience. i was actually born in mission viejo, and back in 89 when all those big quakes went down, i slept through them. I was only 5 years old, but i remember waking up and seeing the chandelier(sp?) still swinging, and the quake happened about 30 min before. id take southern cali weather and earthquakes over any other weather any day. i cant wait to move back! haha
