I have attended a couple detail clinics, and had the "expert" use my hood to show us how to use the porter cable. Detailing (the correct way) is an art. With that said, I really haven't done sh*t to my car! Most likely my paint looks good because:
1) claybarred it last month (the only time I've claybarred this car), prewax application, wax. Haven't even applied a paint sealant. lol
2) park in a garage both at home and work
3) hand wash only with shampoo conditioner - use two diff sponges one for car's paint, another for wheels and undercarriage only. Also very anal-retentively run my hand across sponge before it hits the car to make sure no particles or grit is on it.
4) Dry car using the Absorber, then Mother's detail spray with microfiber towel; use separate set of towels to dry the dirty cracks of door seams, trunk, interior.
5) Car is never dirty for more than a day if I can help it.
6) Never use car washes especially full service ones - the terry cloth towels can cause swirl marks! I use touchless or self serve in the winters to remove salt. Never use the brush at self-serve - you never know what shit is on those things!! When I do self serve I bring my own sponge, go at an off-peak time, soap, sponge, rinse, dry.
7) Last but not least, my 5 year old and 2 year old are 'trained' to never touch daddy's car, stay far away from daddy's car if on their bike, and to always let an adult open the car door. How's that for paint-finish management! LOL my wife's car is a different story!
I have a list somewhere of all the products I want for my detail kit. You can check out AZ's detail forum for tips on products (that's where I got most my ideas) as well as some pics on some great detail jobs.
