EBC won't stop building boost....Greddy Users Please help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, after finally getting my EPC and CEL issue figured out (had severe intake, vacuum, and exhaust leaks ), I now have an entirely new problem....My Greddy Profec B Spec II will not stop building boost. The unit is fully functional, as it was JUST serviced by a Greddy customer service tech. Bought a new solenoid and harness, so everything is in tip top shape. I hooked up the COM port to the WG, and the NO port to a brass nipple that is welded into my intercooler pipe right off the turbo.

Now, my initial plan was to run 15psi on low boost and 18psi on high boost (don't wanna blow my motor). So I put SET to 30%, GAIN to 5%, and i set the limit at 1.03 for low boost and 1.04 at high boost. But, whenever I drive WOT, the wastegate opens up ALL the way, boosting the car WAY over 20psi for only an instant. Whenever this happens, I IMMEDIATELY back off the throttle. So, whenever I accelerate, the solenoid valve opens up 100%, leaving the turbo to boost as much as it desires at WOT......So, I'm not sure if I've set it up improperly, or if something is wrong with either my settings or the unit itself.

I can provide pictures of how i've got it set up, or I can explain further about how I've got things wired, but I DO think that I've got it correct, according to the instruction manual. So, if anyone out there has any suggestions PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send em my way, because I really wanna get this thing running so I can do some logs. Thanks

That doesn't make sense. If the wg opens all the way the boost would decrease. Maybe you meant the solenoid valve opens all the way. It sounds like the EBC is setup to allow a boost spike.

Did you put in a start boost? You can decrease the start boost to help control boost spikes since it forces the solenoid valve to start opening sooner. This is on page 17 of the manual.

Re: EBC won't stop building boost....Greddy Users Please help!

Sorry, I meant the solenoid opens up all the way.....my bad

But as far as the start boost goes, I set it very low, at like .70 x100kpa or something, and it still boosts as high as it wants to. When I lower the start boost, it doesn't help....

Can someone else out there post their settings and I'll give it a try

maybe try turning the set to lower percentage. What psi is your wastegate? I will post up the settings that I have on my profec B.

What happens when you lower the set % or when you lower the gain?

If you turn off your EBC or bypass the motor you can find out what psi the wg spring is rated at.

Well, I think I might've found the problem......turned off the EBC, and went WOT, and the car did the same thing. Continued to build boost......so now, I'm assuming that my wastegate is toast.....some correct me if I'm wrong

    Then it is plugged.

You can check this buy using a new hose to go right to the WG from the pressure spot.

What do u mean by a pressure spot? Do you mean the wastegate itself is plugged?

If u don't mind, can you explain a bit more? I'd really like to know more from an expert

Well, I was on the phone with a greddy tech a while back, and he test everything in the unit, including the solenoid, and everything was working perfectly.....Greddy doesn't normally do repairs, but he was nice enough to help me out, even tho I didn't have a receipt.....If it is the unit, I'll be devastated cuz I have no money to buy a new one....What part of your unit was defected?

Pull the 2 hoses that go to your solenoid completely off from where hook up to the wg and to your IC pipe. Then take a new hose and run it from the IC pipe straight to the WG, basically bypassing the solenoid completely. Drive the car and you should only hit what ever the WG spring pressure rating. If you hit more boost then that you have a bad WG or it might just be set too tight. YOu can check to see what it is by suppling pressure with a air compressor to the wg and see how much pressure it takes to open it.

Well I'm guessing the control unit itself is bad. They just told me to put 12v to the solenoid and hear it click. It does. And there is no real way to check the head unit. Its still under a year so I should have a new one soon. I jsut bought a mbc for like 40 bucks and put it in for now.

Well, it turns out my wastegate had gone bad.....i did everything that mike suggested, and nothing helped. Hooked up the wastegate to an air compressor, and pumped 10psi into it, and it didn't move.....it took nearly 30psi to get it to move....So I just ordered a new one from 034, and I hope this does the trick

If it still opened it might just be too tight. There are 2 nuts on the arm that allow you to loosen how much tension is on the wg actuator.

2.5" hotside pipe is really not needed till you get to a GT35r. If you want a 2.5" hot size pipe on a competition kit it will have to be custom since the inlet on the end tank will also need to be changed. The "race series" 800hp fmic that ER makes for the B5 uses 2.5" pipes on both sides.

Can you remove the WG actuator easily on the 2871R? The K03 has to be removed in order to do so. Hopefully when you remove the actuator, the wastegate flap will move freely.

Re: EBC won't stop building boost....Greddy Users Please help!

It wasn't that easy to remove....I had to take the turbo off of the manifold and the downpipe...the oil and coolant lines are still attached, but I had to unbolt it to get to the wastegate....fortunately, the wastegate flap does still move freely

I'm actually gonna start looking for a new turbo, cuz I really have lost all confidence in the one that I bought. I made the mistake of going the cheap route, and might have bought a bad one. Even tho it boosts still, i'm not sure how much longer it'll last.....So if anyone out there has one, or knows where I can get one, please lemme know

    How about a nice 3071R

Drive it till you break it. If it boosts and don't leak oil then it does what its supposed to do; work.

True true.....well, it doesn't leak oil.....yet....but I'm definitely still gonna keep my eye out....I might see if I can find a GT3071r wg, cuz I don't want to change my plumbing, and it'd obviously be nice to have more power when I get around to throwin some rods in

Well, given the fact that the wastegate isn't opening at all anymore, regardless of what kinda air I push through it, I'm gonna assume its done for.....I already ordered the new one, and it'll be here in a day or so....hopefully that'll fix the problem....THEN i can start tackling my serious AFR and idle issues
