Yes usually your rotors are warped when this happens.

    Re: brake shudder...

ok so if that is the case do i just have to replace the rotors, or all the pads and calipers likely to be messed up as well...?
and also is it likely to just be the front rotors or the rears as well?

    Re: brake shudder...

I would check all the rotors, starting with the fronts. The pads may or may not be still good.

    Re: brake shudder...

alright i may just decide to replace the entire brake assembly then... what size rotors do i need for B5 S4 calipers if i decide to go that route. and will the whole assembly fit behind my OEM non-sport wheels?

Not sure about the B5 S4 calipers fitting, but Adam@SSP can hook you up with rotors...

    Re: brake shudder...

You don't neccesarily need new calipers, just to replace the warped rotors and pads if they are worn or damaged. If you were to do the S4 upgrade, you don't need to do the rears as well.. I hope that helps..

    Re: brake shudder...

If you want to upgrade your whole entire brake system you can do S4 front calipers, carrriers, rotors, pads and also do rear S4 calipers, carriers, rotors and pads IIRC, your rear rotors and pads may be fine. With out inspecting them for run out you won't be sure though. If you are running stock power the upgrade really isn't neccesary unless you plan on doing some chip/turbo upgrades in the future then go for it. You may be able to find B5 S4 Calipers and carriers in the classifieds cheap. If you are just looking to fix your brakes I would get some of Adam's rotors (oem dimensions) and some Hawk HPS pads or what ever you feel you want. I did Adam's rotors and Hawk Ceramic pads and am very pleased with them, $300 for rotors and another $160 for pads I believe.

    Re: brake shudder...

alright thanks a lot for your help! i'm gonna go with full front and rear brakes as there are a couple full sets in the classifieds and i'm quite unimpressed with the stock B6 A4 brakes anyways... also i'm planning to go 1+ in the near future.

    Re: brake shudder...

just have a buddy put the rotors on a lathe and throw them back on.

you'll know if that was the problem. the PO let some-ahole impact gun the wheel bolts on to about 250ft/lbs (89ft/lb is nominal) made some crazy warped patterns.

    Re: brake shudder...

Be careful of the back brakes they need a special caliper retacting tool to remove them. Some have used a modified brake cube. Hope this helps

I think you need 5mm spacers for OEM bad ass 16" rims with B5S4 (HP2's) calipers. And I don't think B5S4 rear calipers work on our cars, but I might be wrong.

Damn... late edit! I mean the b5s4 fronts bolt right up, but not 100% sure about the rears. I got the b5s4 calipers in the front.

    Re: brake shudder...

about 90% sure LOL. But send a PM to "AudiA4_20T" I remember he had HP2's behind 16" OEM rims went we did my timing belt.

b5s4 calipers don't always have good caliper height clearence on certain rims. So a spacer is needed. But please confurm with Clint to be sure!
