So I got HIDs for the first time

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I ended up buying 8500k HID's.
It was at a shop in which my boss and the shop's owner are good friends, poker buddies, etc.

    Any perks in getting these?
I got both fog and headlight HIDs

I also want to get new headlights and eyelids
Does anyone know of any good ones?

Sorry to threadjack, I was installing my HIDs last night with the help of someone nicely experienced in HIDs/autolighting/electronics. I was getting that stupid clip off my passenger headlight and that thing you have to push in to make a click snapped off. Luckily the kid was able to do it with the headlight hanging out but how am i ever gonna get that clip off now ?

I found it much easier to completely remove both headlights, head downstairs to my basement to connect the bulbs into the socket, dremel a hole for the wires and seal it up afterwards.

After that, I proceeded to install my headlights back on the car. Once that was done, I connected the wire ends to the ballast.

Voila...piece of cake even at 1 in the morning!

Re: So I got HIDs for the first time

And to the OP, if you get aftermarket headlights you will have to make sure the projector in them is OK for HIDs, and on the eyelids, I would stay away, search eyelids and you will see pics that very few people can pull them off. Its usually people with full body kits and has the eyelids painted and stuff. Stock headlights are good for HIDs I got mine on last night and they are perfect, no problems. Maybe clear corner your housings if you want but as far as headlights its either stocks, ecodes which are basically stocks with the same general look but a little different for alot more $$. Other ebay headlights idk if they can have HIDs with their projectors so you are pretty much stuck.

It is visible, because above 50,000K there is no change in color. So 125,000K looks just like 50,000K which doesn't look much different from 10,000K.

the reason there's so much debate is that even a 6000K kit (and some 8000K) seem to be brighter than most stock halogens - that's why people don't make a distinction as the light output being lower..

but if you put a 4300K bulb in one housing, and a 10,000K in the other - you'd see a huge difference in color and intensity.

that being said -- 4300K ftw

Prejudice would imply we don't have the facts about 10,000K HIDs. It's the opposite. Knowing the facts like the poor lumen output compared to genuine Philips/Osram 4300~5400K bulbs, or how blue light scatters everywhere, completely washes out colors of illuminated objects and diminishes perceived contrast... Is why we disapprove of anything above 6000K. If you think you see perfectly, then I'm afraid you have a very low standard of perfection. Try some 4300K bulbs, then you'll change your opinion. Headlights are not about looking "cool" or "sick", they're about safety, and 10,000K HIDs compromise safety, and not just yours, but other driver's on the road as well.

Cops may not care, out of ignorance perhaps, but rest assured, it's illegal, and for good reasons.

As your color numbers (i.e.6500k) go up, your light output (lumens) go down.

Way to ruin his joke haha, i don't think he was serious.

As for this "anything above 6000k=rice", then why do saab's come stock with like 12000K these days? (don't take this as an indication that i like saab's but you get the point).

The purple you see is only from certain angles, it's caused by the optical lens. The bulb behind it, is the same as the rest of the industry, 4300K made by Philips or Osram.

Indeed. I see B6s all the time, and they look purple too from certain angles.

8000k bulbs are downright dangerous for visibility, especially in wet conditions. I'd sell them on ebay and get some 6000k (MAX!) bulbs.

Re: So I got HIDs for the first time

well i drove around my girlfriend's 03 rsx for 2 weeks while we were on a road trip and it has regular halogens. I was driving it around without thinking much of it i wasn't used to the color but i wasn't thinking i can't really see or anything. I got home and drove my car at night for the first time and HOLY SHIT it was like the difference between night and day, literally. My lights are so much brighter than hers. I didn't even really think anything of it when i was driving her car, but once i got back to mine i appreciated my lights a hell of a lot more. So no matter how much you tell me that my 10k lights are inferior, they still work a hell of a lot better than stock halogens which is what like 90% of the vehicles on the road use. Drive down the freeway and look at on coming traffic and see how much yellow is coming at you and how many white or blue ones you can point out. Yeah i'm sure 6000 or 5000 or 4300 is brighter than what i have but my shit is bright enough i can assure you. And i bet you andrew08 is gonna get his 8500's home and get them in his car and be able to tell the difference immediately as well. Ever since i put mine in they've been so much better than those damn PIAA halogens, and let me tell you, i love them every time i drive at night.

It's all about personal preference, and although I do enjoy the "rice", "blue", "autozone", "Lumen vs Color" argument, I simply got the 8500's because they were

    A. Given to me for free
    B. Given to me for free
    and last but not least
    C. Given to me for free.

    =p

I'll deal with them for now haha

Re: So I got HIDs for the first time

I read these threads and am leaning more towards 4300k for low beams & 6000k for fogs...I think that'd be a good setup for visibility and aestestic purposes.

Does anyone have experience with the 4300k Silverstar low beam bulbs, Walmart has them for like $30 in H11, but don't know how legit they are... because thats a big price difference from the Autobahn Exotics Group Buy for $100 for the same kit(4300k), except they are plug & play, so i'm kinda confused on that.

Re: So I got HIDs for the first time

usually the yellow goes on the bottom. I don't think i've ever seen anyone do it the opposite way. But the reason the Autobahn exotics cost more is because they are real HID's where as the wallmart silverstar bulbs are probably "HID look" bulbs like what another guy on here was talking about with the autozone cool blue lights. Go with the opposite set up if you have to mix temps. I see rsx's with yellow fogs and blue lows all the time and i think it looks stupid and i don't understand the color mixing myself.

And on the note of e-codes making the light look more purplish. I saw some 12k's tonight on an STI and i have to say that the difference is huge. I see the new TSX's and Lexus's and Audi's and Bimmers all the time and they have such a slight amount of purple it's hardly even noticable.

But this on the other hand is extremely interesting...
