well when the CEL came on I drove 1 mile home. I actually just got a new catalytic converter (replaced under warranty). If I drive 10 miles on 3 cylinder does it destroy the catalytic converter? Or since I unplugged it it's okay? I'll be hard press to get a ride first thing in the morning.

Unplug the #3 injector so you don't pump raw fuel through the catalytic converter. Unplugging a non-working coil pack won't make any difference. Driving 1 mile shouldn't have hurt anything. 10 miles might.

If you unplug the #3 injector you can drive it since there will be no unburned fuel going through the cat. sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant don't drive it as is.

Personally I would try to find a way to get the coil pack without driving it. But if you unplug the #3 fuel injector you shouldn't do any damage to the cat. Just drive it slow and easy.

    good luck!

Towing it might cost you some good money, do you have audi roadside? they can always tow it for free.

If not, im sure you can find someone to drive you there and back.

x2 if you have Roadside dont think twice, let them take it to dealer. I did that once when my camshaft broke just like that in the middle of traffic.

If you can't get a ride, isn't a taxi to and from the dealer cheaper than a tow?

LOL true true. I was in "panic" mode. Can't think straight.

Anyways, crisis averted. A fellow stlvw dubber came to the rescue. Apparently both 2nd and 4th CP failed. Just my day, now that I learned my lesson, time to stock up.

First rule of owning a 1.8T: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have a spare coilpack somewhere in the car!

Re: can i unplug the bad coil pack and run on 3 cylinder?

i drove 45 miles home on 3cyl. unplugged the injector and coil for the bad cyl.

then 2 months later...another coil went out. drove 15 miles home with 3cyl.

got home and bought new hitachi E coils. been PERFECT ever since.
