    New Owner: Question about HID's

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi everyone, I will be picking up my new 2008 A3 2.0T 6 Speed on Friday. I am coming from a Toyota world. Previous car was a 2003 TRD Supercharged Corolla.

I did not get my car with the technology package as a result it does not have 'HID's'. I was wondering if I can buy one of those retrofit kits like I used in my Corolla and use with the A3 or will it give me some trouble/dash lights? I have searched but did not come up with anythinging so I'm hoping some of you can help.

    Thanks

I've been looking on several message boards and have come up with nothing other than knowing that a lot of A3 owners have been having issues with blowing their wiper motor's with aftermarket HID Retrofit kits. I'm just trying to find which kit would work not throw the bulb out warning etc.

Was hoping someone on here could point me in the right direction.

Here you go, cant go wrong with these, awesome quality, and customer service from this company, and some of the best looking kits ive seen, far better than those garbage VME kits.

    CQlight.ca

Here is a link for the H7 HID Conversion Kit, $165.99 for the set.

Many of the B5 A4 users on here are using these on their ecodes, I did on my old B5, loved the light output and temp color of the bulbs far better than my OEM stock HIDs on my A3. Plus their new line come with the ultra slim ballasts for easier installation. Hope that helps.

^^^ Any kit should work.... your HID conversion kit is gonna be plug-n-play... has nothing to do with the wipers, I have never heard anything about issues with wipers when plug-n-play HID kits have been installed.

Re: New Owner: Question about HID's

i read about the wiper thing over on audiworld. something to do with the balast drawing a large amount of power on initial start up. i also read something about flickering where you need to use the vagcom to change some seting and there was the thing with the bulb out light or warning cuz the hid balasts draw less power compared to 55watt halogens.

i'm not saying i'm believing everything i read but i'd rather do my homework before getting started than run into issues.

then make sure the kit is a 55watt kit, that would solve any issues

You also need the proper housing for it to be a true retrofit.

    ddmtuning.com has 55w ballasts.

+1 on the HID housing comment. YOu don't want to be an asshole and blind everyone from the back with your halogen housings. You should find yourself a set of Projector housings either the euro or US spec version. How quick was your S/C corolla? Most of the drivers I've seen in those corollas are mostly middle aged/old asian ladies that don't look anyway but straight.

Never tracked that car. Put down 170+ untuned with the TRD piggyback. The AFR needs to be leaned out a bit, have all the stuff but I'm just lazy. You are dead on about the demographic of that car. I got it as a dd for college and have held on to it. Put in a descent bit of wrench time to make it more fun to drive.

Honestly I dont remember the Kit I have. Have never had any problems other than very cold mornings the balasts dont want to play nice till they have warmed up for a couple of minutes some times.

I have heard that the digital one's dont do that power surge thing at startup. I was planning on buying the Digital 55 watt HID's to play it totally safe before winter gets here.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions folks.
