S4 doesn't like going into 1st or 2nd gear. Help?

So I was driving home and about an eighth mile from the offramp I put it in neutral and coasted up to the traffic light. Then when I went to put it in 1st it took a lot more effort. It also didn't wanna come out of gear or go into 2nd. All the other gears are fine, just the first 2 are effected. In fact, WOT shifting is probably improved at this point for whatever reason.

The car has a Neuspeed short throw, and has always been notchy. In addition, the car has always had a clunking sound when shfted hard or during throttle cutoff transition which I always assumed was a broken motor and/or trans mount, that I was going to address later.

    Any ideas?

BTW: car has a stock clutch, and 69k miles. GIAC X chip.

how many miles on the car? and what year?

my car is a 01.5 (came with the updated syncros) 60K, i dont beat on it but after the new clutch went in and fluids were replaced the car was buttery smooth. I had some major notchiness, which seems to have mostly gone.

1-2 shift collar. I'm in the middle of doing mine. good luck man, its not cheap or fun. Its the feeling we ALL dread in our s4's. the rebuild kit is 1199, or you can usually find good trannys for around 1500

Thanks for the input guys. It seems to be a bit better today and is definitely driveable. Are my days numbered or can I get by for awhile?

I am sorry to say when this started happening to me I thought that I could get by. It would continue to get harder and harder to shift between 1-2. It might get lighter, but it would just stick one day in 1-2 gear or not go in.

The new revised shift coller from Audi is exactly that revised. It is made with a little more tolerance and a different metal compostions to avoid this the 2nd time. So Audi knew ther was a problem, so they made a revised part (like 1-3 syncs), but got away with out a recall.

    Thanks
