Anyone ever have to change their alternator. My battery cannot keep a charge and after a quick test at the local auto store it seems like my charge system is a little lower than normal. After reading Dirtybrd's thread I'm gonna check fuses tomorrow, but then I think I may need to swap the alternator. Any thoughts or on experiences with this? I'm getting the little battery "pop-up" notice when I'm driving.

    Re: Alternator

hmm Audi alternators are very durable and high output. you can check the voltage regulator first.

    Re: Alternator

haven't done it on the a4... but to me it looks liek you just pop off your intake manifold (to have more room) and then go at it with the belt tensioner and the bolts holding the alternator in like on any other car. just a few basic wires after that - then reverse your steps

    Re: Alternator

since you need to remove the alternator in order to replace the thermostat, I'd recommend the thermostat replacement tech article as a good starting point </shameless self-plug>

    Re: Alternator

Thanks for the link Condo. I'm still trying to figure out if I need to change the alternator. I went through the fuses today and had one out but it was not a important one so now its on to the next step.

    Re: Alternator

if your voltage regulator is going out, grab a digital multi meter and put it on AC volts, and put the leads on your battery +,-, see if there is a high amount of AC voltage across your battery. or it could be your battery itself, check the level of your battery.

Thanks, I know its not the battery since I've changed that twice, but I have not looked at the regulator. Good info all around.

Mine came off a TT225HP so I'd have to do some research to see if it fits. Come to think of it. I don't think the bolt holes line up. If you need an alternator contact John (condo)

You can remove it without touching the intake manifold or anything else. Might have to remove your throttle body though but I can not remember. Its four bolts (5mm allen head socket). The serpentine belt can be removed by moving the tensioner with an 18mm wrench (clint ). Then a 13mm socket to remove the main wire and there is a second wire that has a quick connector on it. Then you've got an alternator in your hands. Pretty simple job.

Doug, do you have a DIY on this? I'm 99% sure my alternator crapped out on me today and need it fixed ASAP with a new Valeo.
