    Taller 6th gear?

    I'm kind of disappointed in the 6spd (2002 3.0L 6spd).

I just got it and in contrast the B5 2.8l mated 5 spd the low gears are much better. I'm not getting the point of such a close ratio from 5th to 6th though. I'm still cruising at around 3000-3200 on the highway and there is only a 200 drop in RPMS between 6th and 5th between 75-80 mph.

Are there any options out there for a taller 6th gear/ Like maybe out of a TDI or something? I want to see lower RPMS in 6th... like 2800 at 80. Thoughts?

Holy! I was pretty sure the 3.0 redlines at like 6k RPMs.
What did you do to get it running at 3,000,000 RPMS?

In all honesty I know what you're talking about - It's really meant as a 5spd with an overdrive gear. Your chances of finding a taller 6th gear alone are probably pretty low. However if you replaced the Transmission, that's another story. Be prepared to spend no less than $5000 for that though.

That's my point. It's not like an overdrive at all. It's like the used the same top gear ratio as the B5 and just crammed an extra in between.

    REALLY!? Wow... ok

My B5 2.8l did 80 at 3000k. The 3.0L has more torque, it should be able to handle a taller top gear.

Good luck with that. I got an incredible deal on mine, otherwise I would not have done it.

    LOL, I need to.

First gear sounds like a TDI golf, and 3rd grinds bad.

Nothing wrong with a TDI golf. My roommate has one and I want a TDI (might be getting a TDI Jetta).

40+mpg, what's not to like. They're rising in value also.

    Re: Taller 6th gear?

I am on the lookout for a 2.8 trans.

My 5spd so far is great, even at 102 miles with many launches...but I just "get that feeling" that it wont last too much longer 3rd gear sometimes has a notchy feel, like it will eventually start to grind.

    Re: Taller 6th gear?

Just add the 2.8 5th gear to your 1.8 trans, that way you can keep the shorter 1.8 gears and a taller 5th. The 2.8 gears are to long and your car will lose some pep.

    Re: Taller 6th gear?

I'm now on the lookout for a blown/trashed B5 S4 tranny. It has a taller 6th. Obviously a GOOD tranny would cost a fortune. A trashed tranny would not likely have a bad 6th gear. All this pending of course the demise of my clutch. I'm not going under there without a reason.

Or just find out what parts you need to do the swap. I imagine just the 2 gears.

I can definitely feel how 'long' the 2.8 gears are. And my car isn't making anywhere near the power it is supposed to right now (read: tune). We'll see how it feels after I get a new tune. The plus though, is that its convenient for driving in traffic though. I'm always in 2nd or 3rd now and don't go into 4th until I'm on the highway.

Ideally, in the long run, I do want to use the 1.8 trans with a taller 5th gear. I might have Greg source me a TDI 5th gear and then get new syncros from JHM and rebuild my 1.8T trans. Then sell my 2.8 trans. It'll be easy now that I have a transmission jack and a lift at my disposal

    Re: Taller 6th gear?

    That's the best way, TDI 5th. I could 200MPH with that tall of a 5th and 8500rpms.

Me and my old back. I've had way too many transmissions slip off a regular floor jack and crush my hands to want to do it again.
