Got to the onramp on the highway after leaving work. Had a beat up Camry in front of me that was not accelerating! Got to the outside lane, but had to pause as one car was flying by in the lane next to me. After that, I got on it in 2nd gear to blow by the junker when everything started going crazy.
I was raining at the time, so I thought ESP was kicking in as I was hitting the wet road. I was getting a juttering feeling. Looked down and saw the infamous flashing CEL.
I knew right away. Crap! Blown coil. There was an exit a few feet ahead, so I was able to get off the highway and into a parking lot. Fortunately, I had my VAG-COM with me, so I ran a scan. Misfire on cylinder 1.
Called my local shop that was nearby. They came over with a temp spare coil which got me going again. The Audi dealers around here are open late on Mondays and Thursdays. I was able to get there and buy a fresh set of R coils. Replaced all 4 and now have 3 N coils for emergency use. I decided to replace all 4 instead of just one because I thought that once one would fail, the others might not be too far behind.
I had the N coils put in about 80k miles ago, so I got good use out of them (about 3 years). I'm now at 133k miles. Car is back to a smooth idle.
Wanted to let others know that the coil packs can still blow - just not as frequently as they were a few years ago. Ok... carry on.
