So I want to go RWD

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've read most of the articles, but none have said what EXACTLY to weld on the center diff. It just said to weld it. Could someone say what to weld? pics would be helpful. I was thinking about a stasis 4:1 diff, but I think RWD would just be more badass. I know, quattro is the shit, but after this winter, it won't be seeing any more winters, since it'll be at ASU with me then, and it dosnt snow/rain much down here, so I'll have no use for it. Also, it says just to remove the front axels, but to leave the ABS sensors? how is this done? a full DIY writeup would be sick! thanks

Re: So I want to go RWD

You will be doing the exact opposite if you weld the center diff. Alot of DSM guys do it for fulltime AWD...it helps in launching. My friend did that to his talon and it was a lot better traction wise from a standing start but on a hard turn in a parking lot it would hop and chirp.

no use??? for quattro??? pfff, maybe all season tires, but quattro will out-corner most RWD cars any day. It just makes the handling of the car that much better, it's not just for snow and rain

I do not consider the handling of this car to be good.

SO how about telling me what to do to make it rwd?

listen don't convince me not to do this, I just want to do it, and want to know what it takes

Re: So I want to go RWD

I really dont know if that would be a good idea. I know that the center differential can be modified beyond a 4:1 but you run the risk of decreasing durability. If you think about a differential, it regulates the distribution of power from the front to the rear. Welding the internals should lead to a 1:1 ratio which like Gen said would be the opposite that you are looking for. Furthermore even if you got it to work, I would think that you would run into problems with the balance and overall feel of the car. Audi designed the chassis and weight distribution with AWD in mind. You might not like the outcome.

Re: So I want to go RWD

First off, yea these cars handle like shit but rwd is not going to help the handling. You should work on the suspension of the car to get it to handle better. You want RWD get a mustang.

^ sorry posted before i read your last comment. Contact JHM and Stasis and see what they say. I am actually surprised that JHM hasn't really had any differential upgrades being that they are so good with transmissions. Maybe taking a gear out of it will cut power to the front

Good luck driving in the mountains during the winter. Remember, Tempe is surrounded by them. So unless you plan on spending all your time in Phoenix or TJ, you're going to wish you still had AWD. If not, then have fun driving your friends civic hybrid to Flagstaff cause' it handles better in the snow.

last time i was here in the winter, there was no snow anywhere. you gotta get up to like sedona or prescott before snow really becomes prevalent. And the last time i drove fwd in winter, i almost died, whereas i drove a friends bmw and enjoyed it...

Re: So I want to go RWD

you just have to weld all the little gears in there together so they are one the more you weld the more solid it will be, mine is welded twice as much as the one in the picture(i own the black one in the video) remove your front axles but leave the outer parts as they are what hold your wheel bearings together and the reason for unplugging the abs is the traction control will keep activating when trying to get it to spin

Ok, Well I post 1.04 continuous G's on street tires on a skidpad.. And I need a full more degree of camber before I can really make use of the tires(only the outside of the tires were getting hot..). I suspect I can get 1.10 continuous lateral G's on a skidpad after cornerbalancing and a little more camber.

At any rate.. See this thread about RWD..

it's not just the lateral g's that you can pull that determines your car's handling capabilities. I don't doubt that it's a great car, but you have to pretty big suspension mods to get it to handle well.

Koni coil overs, big rear sway bar w/ metal end links and reinforced sway bar mount, sport front sway bar, a proper alignment and bridgestone RE01-R's. All in all about 500 of tires and 1200 of suspension.

I spend my time at the autox's and the car is very competitive, one of the fastest street tire cars out there.

whatever drugs your on i want some, i dont know any anyone would want to make an S4 rwd...

I had a R32 Skyline before the audi pushing about 240rwkw, this thing was fast, but there is nothing fun about going sideways at 120kmh on full boost in the dry, then spinning all the way through 4th gear when its raining...

Occasionally fun, used to drift it and what not but fark i was spending alot on tyres..

When it rains im so happy i have quattro powah and i munch anything from the lights, sheet even in the dry i love carving the corners up...

If you havent already, upgrade the rear swaybar, its cheap and makes a world of difference in the handling... goes from being an understeering idiot to an oversteering legend in no time..

Re: So I want to go RWD

like previously stated, I don't drag/race at all. I just use it for occasionally stomping dbags who don't respect the 4 rings. I know sooo many people think that it's stupid to do, but these are teh same people who think that every thing that is done on this car HAS to be exactly the same as cars built prior to it. I don't disagree with everything (aftermarket body kits usually suck, fart cans= gayness, ebay headlights are for losers, etc..), but I'm going to be in an environment where generally, there is no weather, and i don't anticipate it going through another winter, minus this one. I want it to be RWD so I can actually accelerate like a 300+whp car should from a roll. I could give a shit about drag launching it. I don't take it on twisty roads (wisconsin was not a place for windy roads, especially southern). I just like to wind the turbos up and get pushed in the back of my seat when I'm crusing.
I understand quattro is great and everything, I know that, it's great fun, but I know that RWD can be a little more fun in an area where I don't need 4 wheel drive

Re: So I want to go RWD

^^^sounds like it will be fun, thats the whole reason for loving cars and modding. Its your car and money. I would love to do the same thing, and might when I finalize my move. Cant wait to see it when its done. And I have a friend and she is from Beaver Dam.
