    Re: How hard ?

    Basic Instructions

    1.) Drain Coolant
2.) Remove spark plugs and wires (or coil packs)
3.) Move any coolant line (hard or soft) in the way
4.) Move any other wire or line in the way of the head being removed
5.) disconnect the exhaust from the exhaust manifold and the inlet plumbing to the throttle body. Some vehicles require you to remove the intake and exhaust manifold but you may not have to.
    6.) Remove the valve/cam cover
7.) I would recommend bringing one cylinder to top dead center.
8.) Remove cam(s) carefully noting their position (timing)
9.) Remove timing belt from the cam(s) pulley again carefully marking it's position
    10.) Remove all head bolts
    11.) Remove head

Some cars certainly have slight differences and I myself couldn't tell you much about a '92 Golf. You could buy a Haynes or Bentley manual for the car that will tell you in more detail how to do it. You'll also need new head bolts and any gasket that you took off should also be replaced.

One more tip, be sure not to put the head gasket on upside down :). I'm ashamed to say I've done this. THe bolt holes will line up but it WILL NOT hold coolant LOL. Well, good luck with your decision.
