i just purchased a used 06 a4. it is my first audi, however i have owned several volkswagens in the past. the alarm seems really pathetic. it just "beeps" and when i hit the panic button, i can barely hear it in my driveway. i do not live in an area that is prone to break-ins, i live in the middle of the woods. however i would like to be able to hear the alarm, i do know if this is just a setting, or a crappy alarm. i do not want to ask the dealer because they always give me the runaround. i wanted to know what others thought as well.

That part of it bugged me a little, but if you really think about it, when someone hears a car alarm these days, they think it's really annoying and just ignore it or walk away.

My cousin's BMW has a beeping alarm, but it's a lot louder and you can really hear it. I guess if it really bugs you, you could always upgrade to a Viper alarm.

As already said. It doesn't matter how loud your alarm is because most people will simple ignore it. The best alarms are 2-way pager alarms which notify you when your alarm goes off. Though at the end of the day it doesn't matter, because in most cases by the time you get to your car the thieves will be long gone with whatever they wanted.

By the way, in my previous car I had a 2-way Compustar alarm/starter and most of the times it went off, it would be due to some car with a loud exhaust that would set off the stage 1 shock sensor. Even on the rare times the actual alarm went off it would be a false alarm or I was too far to check(up to 2km/1mile) and simply beeped the car to turn off.

So just live with the polite alarm we have in our Audi and make sure to keep nothing valuable in sight.

And if you really think about it, most people will not try to steal an Audi, unless they absolutely know what they are doing and want to take the whole car, in which case, they probably will.

Most small time crooks will not go for a car such as an Audi because they know it has an alarm on it and compare to the Honda parked next to you, more of a hassle.

I agree... most thieves which will be the bums, which will simply steal the stuff inside your car or the mods you have on your car. The professionals who actually know what they're doing will simply flatbed your car and will leave no trace behind, but don't worry our cars aren't worth the hassle of a flatbed truck. Keep in mind we own an entry level luxury sedan, not a RS4 or an exotic like an R8, P-car, F-car...
