    Welcome me! Have question...

    Hello everyone,

    I am new here and appreciate all of the great information I have gleened from this site so far.

    I love German Autos and are more familiar with the BMW than Audi but would like to get some input on the purchase of a A6 I am thinking of buying.

    It is a 2001 A6 2.7 with twin turbos and quattro. Silver with black interior, Bose sound and nice tires. It has 63,000 miles but has the "Check Engine" light on.

    What do you think of the light being on? And what can I expect to go wrong or right with this car? It seems to drive well both starting and stopping but I am new to Audi. Also, it only has one key and extra key with remote entry. It is a local dealer who I trust. Said he got it from another lot who could not sell it with the Check Engine light on.

    Any input is really appreicated.

    Shawn

    Just take it to a garage and get a Vag-Com hooked up to it, and get the light off, if the car is running fine, its prolly just some stupid code error, but at 75,000 miles you will need to do a Timing belt and water pump service and runs around $1200-1500, thats about it.

    Stampy - I have to ask... What is happening to that lady in your Avatar? Is that a meat grinder she fell into or what?

    Take it for a ride, go WOT in 3rd gear on a quiet road and listen for loud turbos. After you slow down, pull over and check for smoke. Also sniff around for coolant scents.

    The two most common repairs on the 2.7T are failed turbos and a leaky auxilliary water pump.

    As Frank mentioned, the timing belt is supposed to be changed at 75K miles. Parts are about $350 and the labor can be around $1000 at a dealership. If the timing belt is not done yet, you should try and use that for leverage on a price drop.

    You can also take the VIN and call Audi to see if there are any outstanding recalls on the car.

    The check engine light is hard to pinpoint because there are too many things that would trigger a full on CEL. You really should get the code read and see exactly what item is complaining first. Some items can be simple fixes. Some might not, (catalytic converters, EGT sensors, etc...)

    Wide
    Open
    Throttle

    (aka. Pedal to the Metal)

    A properly running 2001 A6 2.7T should see the following fuel consumption:

    City = 17MPG
    Highway = 24MPG
    Combined = 20MPG

    Re: Welcome me! Have question...

    You can also just take it to AutoZone and get them to read the code for you. It will just be a generic OBDII code, but it will be a start. We might be able to help you a little better then. Food for thought though....the 2.7T is a bomb waiting to go off. You should really just search it up on here and the B5 S4 forums. Make sure you are comfortable with the amount of $$$ you might have to donate to your car regularly. The turbo thing DAFT mentioned....thats like $4000+ right there.... and it can happen for no reason.

    I don't know what happened to the lady. The full version is on Youtube. I have been using this Avatar for years.

    Re: Welcome me! Have question...

    Great feedback.

    Thanks.

    So I looked in that section. Am I missing something, I did not see were the 2.7t was a big problem.

    So I guess you are saying, that it is a known fact that 2.7t is a bomb waiting to happen? So glad I checked here first.
