Ok, I want to hear your comments on the show, good or bad, but if they are bad I would very much appreciate it if you could also suggest an alternative or solution to whatever your issue happens to be.

I was not there, but I did get a bit of feedback from a few folks on the ground, so I am interested to hear what everyone else has to say. For those who have never met me, DATR is my baby... I started it and ran it for the first five years. I am eternally grateful to Mike and Nate for keeping it alive, but I am also keenly aware that the show will die if people leave unhappy without a resolution, so let's hear it.... oh yeah and SHOW ME YOUR PICS!!

And it was in King Of The Mountain because there were only 3 other B6s in attendance. I was actually glad he made it there though, as it pulled him out of my regular Audi class and I didn't have to give him a Trophy..................

When he found out I was a judge, he talked that car up and down and even referenced The Fast And Furious................

    Re: DATR pics and feedback

A couple of suggestions from working the registration side of things. We managed well enough, but honestly it was a mess. We had a registration tent. Two people working it, with one list, and we had all of the T-Shirts. So it might as well have been one. People were paying as they came in, and then came over to use after they parked to register. Since all of the money was going to point A and not us, we had no cash. So when people started coming up asking to buy T-shirts, we couldn't sell them. So later they decided to start selling T-Shirts at the main tent. So now you had people getting shirts from us after they registered. And people having to go to the main tent to buy them. The dyno shoot-out and slow drag registrations were all held at different areas. They later decided to move the dyno reg to our tent. But made that announcement before they told us. So I had people wandering over wanting to register for the dyno and I had no clue what they were talking about. I think they initially had people paying for the slow drag, and then decided to make it free. So they had to track down and refund people who had already paid. All cards for the car show were hand written, by us, that morning. Basic things like pens and clipboards were non existent. Also the hand stamps were only where they were taking money. So I could not stamp people who wanted to leave and come back. I also had no proof that any of them paid up top. So I had to take their word for it. Most people are honest enough, but a good number aren't. There were no signs or anything even indicating that my tent was for registration. Just kind of people trying to direct everyone to us.

I don't like to come into other people's events and tell them what needs to be done. I am on the Board of Directors for a Jeep club, so I have a good bit of experience in handling events for large groups. And I know I wouldn't appreciate a new guy coming in a stepping all over my toes. So I just beared with them this year.

My suggestions for next year on the registration are this. A slightly larger tent with two tables under it. Three people manning it, each with their own list of preregistered individuals. A sign across the front of the two tables, reading Event Registration. Have one made up or do it nicely on poster board. Centralize registration for everything. Have everyone pay for everything at that tent, basic reg, dyno, and slow drag. That way everyone can buy t-shirts there as well. And you don't have people running around to three different tents to pay for stuff. Have the basics, clips boards, plenty of pens. Some snacks and water for the people working the tent. Have registration cards actually printed up beforehand instead of homemade index cards the morning of. Thats all that comes to mind. Also try to rotate the people out a little. Between that tent and being a judge, I didn't get to enjoy just walking around very much. They did offer to relieve me, but at that point we only had about an hour left of registration.

Pluses were the raffle. The people that handled that did an outstanding job, and I liked how it was setup. Also points to Nate for keeping the Mic going all day. I know something like that can be difficult, but he kept it up.

One more thing, as far as the car show goes. The cars were parked pretty well. But we ran into the problem of the shop cars. They were entered into all of the regular categories. And you might be judging all of the B5s in one spot, and then have to hike all the way to the other end of the parking lot to look at one shop B5. I suggest lumping all of the Vendors into a Shop Car class. I also think that makes it a little more fair to everyone else. As the shops have some change to drop into those and its really hard for everyone else to compete.

I did have a great time though. It was a blast, a lot of good people and Vendors.................

Well, I would love to talk with you offline or on Yahoo if you have some time. My yahoo name is ssnapier.

A lot of that was already mentioned to me by the staff guys, they recognized some of the same issues, but it was too late in the game to sort it out.

Thanks for the response though, that is exactly what I am looking for!

Hey this is Pete, the volunteer with the "STAFF" shirt that judged your car. I can’t quite put my finger on your tone so please don’t take this response personally:

Yes I did understand everything about your car, however it was not my place to correct you or call you out on your performance claims.

Yes, the judging method of points was an effective medium to identify the cars that stood out which eliminated the judge’s preference and taste. After listening about your car and specific quotes of “Fast and Furious” references, I really had to remember and focus on the fact that I was a judge, not “Gallep” that cringes at cars like these. However, I appreciated your passion, enthusiasm, and effort into the car and the sport judging your car accordingly; resulting in first place out of the small handful of B6’s that were present during the judging. However, since you were later elected “King of the Hill”, that took you out of the basic competition. I hope this clarifies any confusion you might have had.

I have no doubt that Pete judged your car fairly, he is a solid Audi guy with some deep roots. We have literally spent years working out our judging system, and we know that car show are a highly subjective and sometimes controversial thing that require a great deal of thought. The trick is to try and find a balance that allows every car at the show to have a shot at winning (if they put in some effort of course) and let me tell you... that is not easy!

I have judged quite a few shows myself, and we tweaked our system to blend a bunch of other methods. I think it works quite well, but there will always be a few guys who disagree with the judging... on a very rare occasion, there was a legitimate screw up and we correct those as quickly as possible. None of us get anything out of picking a certain car as the winner, we try to judge everyone on pure merit following the guidelines of the judging sheet. My hat is off to those who volunteer to judge shows like this, it is a tough job!

What Pete said. Even though I didn't want to give you a trophy strictly for the Fast And Furious comment and the LEDs thrown all over the car. Those were personal biases, and in no way effected my judgment of your ride. Had you not made it to King Of The Mountain, you would have walked away with 1st place in the B6 Class. Like Scott said it is a large combination of the things. The red B5 S4 took first place in that class and their car was mostly stock. But the thing was so clean I could of eatin off of it. So that won him huge points, over the Avant I gave second to. Who had very tastefully done mods and a great looking car, but just wasn't as cherry. I was not wearing a Staff shirt, as they ran out. But I was a judge and was there while Pete was looking your car over. You were talking to him, but I was listening. It;s not anything personal, thats just how I felt about your car.

Wait, they handed him first for the B6 Class? it should have gone to a Dolphin Gray B6.

Edit: Looking at the pictures, looks like the right guy got the award.

This would be a much better show if it was not judged like socaleuro. I don't go anymore because of the BS judging that was done 2 years ago. I saw a break-down of the judging sheet and saw that the guy who beat me got points for mods he did not have, and even more points than me for mods that were less cost, less performance than mine. It was biased since the judges and guy who won are both edition719 members and friends.

Hey guys this was only my second car show. The first one was the exotic car show, and this one. My question is how does the point system work? Do I have to keep track or what? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Sorry for being a noob.

i'm sorry you felt that way Jordan, i thought we were pretty equivalent in our cars that year, but it still doesn't help the fact that it took 3 judges with split decisions to give the award. Granted i didn't have stoptechs (still don't) or a name brand exhaust at the time, but everything else was pretty much equal in terms of tit for tat. yes, you had stoptechs and i had b6 s4 brakes, but you had 18" Jlines whereas i had 19" Jlines, so where i lost a point for brakes, i gained a point for wheels.

I honestly felt like i was going to win without breaking a sweat that year until i saw you roll up. then i was like, fuck, this is gonna get spicy! Jordan, you know i have the utmost respect for you and your car, and all the turmoil you've been through with your motor, but i hope that the judging at that event doesn't jade you from the group or the people; because they are an outstanding group of enthusiasts that bicker and banter like every other group out there. If it's any consolation, you'd blow me out of the water right now if we were to show again...

I don't really like the point system. If you followed it exactly. A guy with a showroom quality stock car, would lose to a modded beater any day of the week. I judged based on how clean the car was and/or how well put together it was. If you have pitted and curbed 20s and the other guy has flawless stock 18s, I am giving him more points for wheels. Clean, clean, clean, thats the number one thing I look for when judging a car.

It is great that you have done so much to your car, and yes it is a competition, but at the same time it is supposed to be enjoyable. For you to come out and throw a minor insult towards one of the judges and his opinion just makes you look like an ass.

Overall, I feel the show was a great success. You guys did a great job. One thing I have a question about - how were the Audi classes broken up? I didnt show mine this year but when I heard the announcement of the winners, it sounded like A4s and S4s went head to head. Is this correct?

i'm not sure if you were there for 2006's show, but it was truly a head to head competition between Jordan and myself. Driving out from las vegas to the show in colorado made things a little difficult in keeping all the little things clean, but i still think we put on a good show. It was all about how well the cars were put together and i know when i asked the judges they had an equally hard time because you could see the amount of work that went into both cars.

This is what i took to DATR 2006

and here is Jordan's gorgeous avant

i'm having the hardest time coming up with better picts, but this is all i can get since i'm not at my computer

Can't pick based on what I see here. But I'd of definitely put you guys at 1st/2nd for the B6 class.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! I'm glad that's how you judge. How "over-the-top" shouldn't dictate "the best car".

I know it's all relative, but I consider my car to have a bit done to it, but mainly performance-wise with some aesthetics (RS4 bumper/grille, wheels, ecodes, coilovers, etc), but more than anything, I desperately strive for the "clean" factor. I detailed the crap out of the interior, exterior, engine bay etc.

Kittrell, again, my sincere appreciation and thanks for how you judge cars -- that's how they should be judged!

P.S. For me personally, this isn't a once a year event for me -- it's a life style. If you ask anyone that knows me, they can vouch that I try to keep my car this clean all year round, not just for DATR.

Considering Jordan's car is not a DD I'm sure it is clean as can be. I would eat a burger off the engine with no problem.

Hey Matt, this is DJ, I was runnin' around with Pete. The way they lay the sheet out, there is 10 points for stock, on most categories, with a maximum of 15 points for modifications. 20 possible points for "showing" (effort put into showing the car, mod list, etc). I know that math isn't going to add up, there are 100 possible points. But like I said, I use that as a guideline. Otherwise a stock car could never get more than 10 points per category.

Yeah I agree we were pretty equal. Lots of the same mods. Don't get me wrong your car is tits, but I saw the judging sheet and felt like I got the shit end of the deal. If anything we should have tied. You actually got more points than me for your brakes. You also got points for having RS4 pedals when I was the one who had them. My suspension is better but since I wasn't dropped as low as you, you got more points for it. I also had a 2.0L and a laminated dyno sheet that didn't score any points cause that's not "show" stuff. What I don't like is now I'd get more points for having a powder coated valve cover, intake mani, throttle body over having a fully built 2.0L stroker. I guess in my mind a fine German auto is more for "go" than "show" IMO. I could care less if I didn't win, it wasn't a big deal in my mind. I would go to the show in the future and show my car but don't want to get judged if I do so. Being at socaleuro twice now was a pleasure and everyone was just there to check out cars. I don't like the fact that at DATR you have to have all your damn doors, hood, etc open and have to sit there and wait until the judges come around. I go there to look at other cars not my own lol.

You don't need the doors hangin' open at all. I just prefer the windows down enough that I can see your interior and the hood popped. Most of the people left their cars. There were only a few standing there while I was judging. I don't leave anything stealable in my car anyways in. So the windows down and hood up does not bother me personally. There were a couple people who might have won, but had their cars locked up tight so all I could see was the outside. So I did not even judge those. Sounds like you guys just got some bunk judging that year. Don't let it keep you from the event. I'd of loved to see your car out there.

I agree that we should have tied. I didn't know they put you down for the pedals and suspension though. The only thing is, i could have sworn you were still 1.8 at the time and it was right after that event that you pulled everything apart and went 2.0. we were both at the GTRS point with pretty much the exact same motor mods, but i didn't know how the scores were tallied up. I was always under the impression it was tit for tat, so the end result was the actual judges final verdict.

I agree that socaleuro is a lot of fun, but it's just a huge g2g, and not a judged show, so it's what comes with the territory, ya'know? I kinda felt jaded about Wustefest and their "peoples choice" awards, but at the end of the day, i still had fun and burned my scalp because i didn't wear a hat. In all honesty, DATR was the last "show" i put my car in...i've lost the passion to show it and just enjoy taking it out for nice cruises and random spurts of 21psi :)

Well you need to get back into it because our B6 showing was pitiful. I didn't bring mine, Pete was a judge, so that left a grand total of three B6s to judge.

You know you are prolly right about me not being 2.0 at that point since the pic you are showing of my car has the ecode fmic on it. I put the er comp on it once I went 2.0. The dyno sheet I had must have been from the dynojet I did in socal back in May 06. I tallied up the points that I got cut down on and if I got the points I was supposed to get I would have actually won by a single point. It's a mute point now though. Both our cars are sick as fuck. I didn't give a shit back then and don't give a shit now, that's why I never brought it up to you after the show. I just feel there is a better attitude when people's cars are not judged and especially by someone who doesn't know too much about that particular model (at least back in 06). I'm with you though and I have no desire to ever "show" my car again. I didn't even really show it at socaleuro, I just parked it behind the eurocode tent lol. If I go down there next year I might just park my car in the lot with every other non-participant. My car might look like a show car but it's a far cry from one anymore. I bought it to drive it like I stole it. That is all.
