    How to clean Exhaust Tips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Everyone,

My 2004 S4 has an AWE exhaust with no Cats and the tips are covered in a black soot. I tried scrubbing them with a REALLY light abrasive pad and soap but it barely made a dent. Anyone have ideas on how I can restore the lustre?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Mother's powerball mini attached to a drill fits perfectly.

Drizzle some Mother's metal polish and they'll look brand new

Brasso metal polish. Wipe on, let it dry and wipe it off. Chrome will look like new and takes minimal effort, almost unbelievably easy. You can buy it in almost any hardware or grocery store.

It takes some time. It took me almost 1 hour to get mine clean when I bought it as a CPO. Now I clean it every time I wash the car.

Very high grit sand paper, like 2500 and up very lightly and then a quick metal polish compound to bring the finish back up. Then you just have to maintain and clean everytime you wash.

how does one end up being able to purchase a car without cats. The previous owner has to have cleared smog before he sells it to you. You should do the right thing and get yourself a set of downpipes with cats. Help the environment out.

Back to your issue. Have you ever heard of magic eraser? give that a shot, it just might do the job. Those sponges are amazimg.

No kidding..with Adam's Metal Polish 1 & 2 (if ever needed 2 at all)... no elbow grease is needed. Anything comes off so easy. All you need is a MF Towel + Adam's metal polish.

Re: How to clean Exhaust Tips

    Any metal polish should work....

It's basically a very very fine polishing compound and should remove any residue from exhaust.

For best results, I usually clean my exhaust tips every time I wash... and it takes a few minutes with minimum elbow work. Don't let that cake on! ;-)

I just used a S.O.S. pad and some elbow grease. My exhaust tips on my car were filthy when I bought the car (doctor owned the car before me... dealer had to pull the seats to detail the car... the interior had crap in every crevice possible.) Talk about a mess.

All cars have to pass smog. A V8 won't necessarily create more pollution than a smaller motor. A 4 cylinder without cats will spew more pollutants into the air than a clean running V8. This guys car is a gross polluter and wouldn't be allowed to roll down the streets if the authorities knew.

My 20 mpg V8 runs clean, so what's your point?

Used the Brasso ~$4 option the other night. Took less than 10 mins, including drying time, with limited elbow grease and returned the tips to a mirror shine. It has my vote for ease of use, not to mention price.

I cleaned about the first 2 inches of the inner portion of the tips, where it is clearly visible as you walk up. The inner surface on mine are not polished like the outer, but now there is no tarnish or soot residue, just shiny stainless steel.

good lord this post makes my eyes hurt. use some professional grade (i.e. 3M) glass cleaner (or for the hell of it, use windex) on the outside of the cans and use the same stuff with some finer steel wool and scrub a little on the inside. if you need 500 different polishes to get them to look new, they're already f*cked.

On a side note for windows... all i use is my wet shammy once the car is dry and a micro-fibre cloth.

No need for any sprays.. just dampen the window and dry it off for a streak free finish. i <3 my micro-fibre cloth!!

Its great for house windows and mirrors or anything shiny like a black fridge ect...
