JHM Weighted Aluminum Shifter Knob

Tonight we went from thought to drawing to prototype to final project.

First, I made the part out of delrin plastic. It turned out great, and was able to test it on the car for feel and looks. All the pictures were taken from my camera phone, sorry.





I actually REALLY like the black knob, i'm going to get mine anodized. And it might even been an option once we make these available for purchase.

We tweaked the design slightly and threw some aluminum in the lathe. It came out awesome.



We wanted to add some weight, so I took some 1" 12L-14 steel aka "leaded" steel. It has a higher content of lead (safe amount) and thus making it heavier.



I pressed in this into the aluminum, and it added a lot of weight.



But this wasn't enough. I fired up the CNC mill and started programming a JHM to engrave onto the top of the knob. This was the final touch to a fun little friday project.



Jason and I were amazed at how much better the shifts feel with this weighted aluminum knob. Thanks for reading

Hey guys, we worked our ass off today! We made a few different knobs, and are not completely sure which ones will be popular or not - so help us out!

We painted and resurfaced some of the engraving patterns and we are going to test them for durability through out the week. Group buy may start as early as next weekend. We need to decide options. Here are the pictures:

Now that I think about it, it is going to be very hard (if not impossible) to get the engravings to line up perfectly on a screw on type knob. We were able to get the JHM engraving on Jason's car perfect because we marked it before we ran the program on it. We might end up going with a epoxy "bubble" sticker so you apply the sticker yourself once you screw it on tight.

This is definitely coming soon. After driving my car, this is the best add on for our shifters. It makes the shifts easier and less notchy.

The one in my car actually brings the knob up 3/4" putting the shifter in a better position to really bang the gears. So we will probably make a stock height knob and a tall knob option (for those who want their knob up). Plus possible anodizing, knurling(for grip) etc.

Look for a PRESALE for these really soon. That way we can have them paid for up front and get everyone the exact style they want.

Oh, and I will get some better pics up soon and weigh the darn thing.

Can the "extra lead weight" be pressed into the delrin knob? I ask because I've had a weighted aluminum GREX/Greddy knob on my old civic and during summer it would almost burn my hand due to the heat.

any metal shifter knob generally sucks bc they conduct a massive amt of heat.

ie, cali guys... leave the whip in the sun, come back to your car, you cant even drive off bc the shifter is 100+degrees. trust me, i burned my palm w my old sparco knob.

also, for cold weather folks, same situation. car is cold enough when you get in it, but the metal conducts so... basically, itll be so cold your hand will freeze.


on a positive note, great job on the weighting, now just keep it DELRIN, and pls make em in BLACK and/or WHITE. its a lil JDM, but i prefer the white to the black FTW!!!

On a positive note, scorching hot shifters should train you to shift faster. If you granny shift you will get burned haha.

Jay, good lookin piece! weighted black delrin would be awesome in my sit, but, I just have a feeling that some of you guys daily driving your cars will put a good wear and tear on delrin, aluminum will hold up signif better, my UUC "rob knob" used to burn the shit outta my hand anytime it was a sunny day

You'd be surprised how strong delrin actually is. I doubt the average user would harm the delrin too much. It would scratch easy though if you drop something on it.

Usually it's best to complete all the work before anodizing so you don't harm the finish. But that would be awesome - we can also consider that.

2nd. I've got a weighted metal UUC rob knob, but it get's both too hot during the summer and too cold during the winter. I wouldn't mind a plastic one, but I wear rings, so if it scratches easily I'm not interested.
