Question Release clutch. Car starts moving without pressing gas pedal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone know what might cause my car to start moving after I release the clutch pedal without depressing the accelerator pedal?
I had the clutch and fly wheel replaced a while back with a South Bend clutch and a new OEM fly wheel. Thanks in advance...

Re: Release clutch. Car starts moving without pressing gas pedal

It's completely normal. The stock clutch does that as well. The transmission is engaged with the motor. The motor and transmission start to spin. That spinning is put into the drive train and then you start to move. When the clutch is depressed, or your in neutral, the engine and transmission remain separated, therefore you don't move when you hit the gas.

I know that in all the manual cars I have had I could just release the clutch slowly and the car would start rolling, just by the idle being high enough to get it going... Is that what you mean?

Sounds completely normal. slowly releasing your clutch engages it and you will roll. That what I tell everyone to do when they are just learning to drive stick.

Yeah I think it really helps getting a feel for the clutch engagement without roasting it

This is how I taught a chick to drive a manual :)...... their fear of 1st gear no longer existed when they found out they can do that.

Re: Release clutch. Car starts moving without pressing gas pedal

Adding on to what everyone has already stated, slowly releasing the clutch at idle should move the car - that is if you are on a flat terrain or slowly rolling forwards from a downward incline. I would not suggest doing this if you have to move forward on an upward incline - you'll stall.

Ah... starting from an upward incline. I can recall a little less than a year ago such a situation scared me shitless since I just started learning how to drive a manual, but it's super easy nowadays.

If you just hold it at the friction point on a hill, you'll stay where you are and not stall, nor roll back. However, if you let it out past there, you will stall.

I do this all the time, do I have to worry that I'm hurting my clutch?

Not as long as you limit the time in this slipping mode, avoid doing this longer than needed to transition from holding with brakes applied, to holding with clutch slipping>move off with full engagement. As soon as the clutch engages fully, the friction surfaces can transfer the heat from slipping to the flywheel and pressure plate.

Re: Release clutch. Car starts moving without pressing gas pedal

On severe inclines I much prefer the hand-brake method.

Leave the car in 1st with clutch fully depressed, when ready to go just let out the clutch and engage accelerator as normal and when you feel the car pulling let off the hand-brake. All this time you can keep the button on the handbrake depressed if you prefer, that way you can disengage the hand-brake slower as necessary.

This avoids overheating and glazing the clutch by slipping it for a longer period of time and takes the fear of rolling backwards out of the picture.

This is only necessary on severe grades but has been a huge help in certain cases for me. Certain newer vehicles have the hill-holder capability and this is essentially how they achieve their results.

If you do it slow enough, thats 100% normal.. I don't recommend doing this too much.
