CEL now off..should I still be worried?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Some of you read the other thread about my check engine light came on for the 2nd time at about 1000+ miles. The 1st time (came on at 164 miles) was due to Oxygen Sensor and dealer replaced it...

The 2nd time came on shortly after I pressed the *tool symbol button* on the gauges display/dash while driving... Manual says that's the 'RESET' button... I was wondering if the Check Engine Light came on because of that? It was on for 2 days and now it's off... Should I still take it to dealer? If it comes back on again, then it's just like the 1st case..the light would be off for days and came back on again...probably another Oxygen Sensor problem...

    Thanks...

You have warranty - you may as well get it checked.

You just gave me a flashback... As i replied in your other post that my warning light for a burned tail light came on as i was driving home after picking up the car... i remember fiddling with that tool button as well which may have triggered it since my tail lights are tip-top and i never saw that warning again...

Im thinking we that might be what caused your warning light to come up as well...

Either way, SoCal is right.. warranty = just have it checked.. its free!

Thank you for the replies, gentlemen. Maybe someone can try to press the 'tool' button while driving to see if that'll set the CEL on?

On a brand new car don't even ask about it- straight to the dealer for every issue no matter how small. You want everything documented in your service records - EVERYTHING!

It's not a waste of time. You have a new car and you want it to be right. I'd just take it in and let the dealer work it out for you. In the meantime just enjoy it as much as possible. I know that these little annoyances suck, but that's life. Cars can be close to, but never are perfect.

Re: CEL now off..should I still be worried?

The check engine light is just an illumination device to let the consumer know there is or was a problem. It will set and store a code in the ecu that will NOT go away until it is cleared. And NO the tool button will not set or reset the actual code. If the cel is just on....that means that the ecu detected some problem that happened for a millisecond or so and is not happening again. If the cel is blinking then that mean the problem is happening at that very instance.

When you start your car every time your ecu will perform a series of tests as long as your vehicle meets the criteria. Meaning your engine coolant temp must be under 150 degrees or your throttle position must be 10% or less.....that kind of stuff. If your cars meets those standards (different for each test) then your ecu will perform that or those tests on your cars emmisions/fuel/ignition systems. And if the ecu sees something that isnt working the way its supposed to....then it makes a note. If it happens a second consecutive time, then it will store a code in the ecu and set the cel to "on"

If you are driving and a week later the cel goes away.....that doesnt mean that the problem is fixed.....it just means that it might not be happening under your driving criteria.

without a doubt get it checked out....weather you vag com yourself just to know what the code is or just bring it in to the dealer.

If it is indeed an O2 sensor that might be covered under warranty for 8 years by federal regulations since it is part of the emission controls system. That is just a guess though...

Re: CEL now off..should I still be worried?

Hey guys, thank you for the input!

Dealer just called and said it's the same problem as before - Oxygen sensor... so they're going to open what's called the 'Tech Report' and talking to AUdi about it.. Sounds serious...

Stormin, it was great to see you! So you'll be Audi sales? Dude did you see all the handsome RS4's they had out there? The black one looked amazing!

No, it was not clear bra... I already have that. It was a dent I wanted the gentleman to fix.

I actually went in to look for you at waiting area but you weren't there? At training, huh?
