grrrr. wont shift!! help!

wow i dont know how to explain this situation.. the car wont shift.. its as if the clutch wont let the shifter engage in any gears.. but when i book it, i can shift to 3rd 4th 5th and 6th.. but from stand still i cant shift to second.. i have to turn the car off.. put it in firrst then start the car and go.. also it wont go in reverse........... i fell like i have to rev match to shift gears!! with no clutch!

anyone have a clue?? i was thinking its eithe rthe short shift linkage, tranny mount? engine mount.. or my friend says its the head cylinder.. anyone with any clue?

no recent mods done, it was always notchy shifting.. and now it seems like its not aligned atj all or the clutch is just not being dissengaged and engaged..

It could be that the shifter linkage is loose and not aligned properly. It could also be that the PP has a broken finger. I would first try aligning the shifter. Is there a lot of play in the shifter?

Sounds like a loosely aligned shifter.

Be careful YMJ. This is how my symptoms started. Was having trouble one day then all of the sudden it started to work again. I was like PHEW... The BAM!!!!! Clutch went.

sorry whats a PP?? i think the linkage is loose to be honest.. there isnt much play in the shifter.. i have a JHM short shift kit.. and neuspeed before that.... neuspeed was very notchy.. the JHM is much better.. but still notchy here and there.. so i think the linkage is defenitly the issue.. or a mount.. i really cant tell cause im no expert..

The exact same thing happened to me last month, though I wasn't as lucky as you to where one day it magically worked okay again. Everything was fine...then one day I started my car, drove normally out of the garage to the stop light and all of a sudden couldn't shift into any gear unless I turned the car off (put it in first) and then rev-match every shift. edit: It also would not go into reverse at all.

I thought (hoped) it was the shifter linkage, hydraulic system (fluid level), or slave cylinder, but it turned out a finger on the pressure plate snapped off. Apparently it's happened to quite a few people on here already. I ended up replacing the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, everything.

With labor it could be around $3k depending on what clutch you run. But that's at high Cali labor prices.

if you eventually plan on the stage 3 just wait, once the motor is out whoever installs would be bitches to charge you much for a CLUTCH job at that point! Thats when I had mine done along with timing belt etc. all the maintenance all at once

My ride has given me problems shifting into reverse since i've owned her. Some days she shifts fine, other days it takes a couple seconds before she will allow me to shift and it will grind like i missed a shift. The previous owner had the clutch and flywheel replaced so I don't know what the issue is.

LOL nothing but bitches here in canada.. they charge for taking a step to the car... LOL.. i wish i lived in the states when it came to tunning and mechanics works! much better work done in the states.. here no one wants to do a FMIC install... i called a couple of shops.. they wanna charge me a grand to install it, cause its a bitch to do it.. and they dont have skills to do it i guess! LOL

One day My car couldn't access R, 1st or 6th and could barely get it into 5th. Took it in and it turns out that the plastic socket part of the shifter linkage had gone to crap. Got the JHM linkage upgrade and now it works as good as before. Get the linkage checked.

hmmmm out of 3 trannys i have seen do the same thing brother its your synchros...if not your lucky but out of 3 i have seen one of them being mine, its the synchros...if 1st and 2nd don't shift then reverse wont either...dont force it and try to make them shift you may bend the forks and also mess up the linkage so get it looked at i can 85% guarantee its the damn synchros...i hate them...lol

get ready for more headaches, more money more problems...you need to fix problems before upgrades...the smartest thing i ever did in my s4 was to disassemble the tranny and get the 1st and 2nd gear and forks cold fired...along with the stg4 clutchmaster and a fidanza flywheel and i can tell you haven't had anymore issues with my tranny...gl with stg 3 though...

Hey my 2001 S4 just did this yesterday. i cant shift into 1st 2nd or reverse even if the car is off. from what i know the collar is broken and can break alot when alot of pressure and rpms are used when shifting... right now im looking at used trannys for 1500 and my uncles shops going to put it in for 1000..... if you find anything else let me know plz
