    Need help - spring compressors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so alot of you read my thread a couple weeks ago that I got most of my 02 sport suspension on except for the rear springs. Well I just called the audi mechanic that I know, and told him the situation and he said the same thing that everyone else on here said: "They got the front springs on without compressors but they couldnt get the rears?"

Well I asked a place to get a compressor because nobody around me rents them, so he told me Sears. So I'm about to run over to sears, but I remember when the mechanics at my dads repair shop told me about the compressors they said there was an adaptor or something for them to fit the springs it was some OEM part number like 1762/2 or something. But the audi mechanic I just talked to said just compressors would do. I just dont wanna go buy them and not be able to use them if I need another part to them.

The more I explain the situation to people and the more they all say that thing about getting the fronts on and not the back, then the more i'm getting a feeling my dads mechanics just blew me off on the back springs because they didnt wanna waste the time because they thought they were doing it for me for free. Even though I still paid them $200 and I would never not pay them, they owe my dad favors sometimes. So I think im gonna go get the compressor and bring it back to them, if they cant use it i'll return it, and i'll have to let the audi mechanic take my car for the weekend and do it on the side.

    Thanks.
    -Nick

Re: Need help - spring compressors

You don't need spring compressors, just have them drop your subframe. It's a whole 2 bolts on either side after disconnecting the shock, lower arm, upper arm, sway bar, etc. Takes very little time. You have to get an alignment done anyway... Cheap spring compressors don't work well for our app. If you want a good one, this is it... expensive though...

Re: Need help - spring compressors

^yea, I just dont wanna go back and start arguing with them after they told me "they couldnt do it". Plus if those compressors are too cheap then that link is a good one, but too expensive. So I think ill just call the audi mechanic and let him take the car this weekend on the side, cuz i cant do the work myself.

Re: Need help - spring compressors

i just put an 02 sport suspension on my car on friday by myself. i went to advance auto and they loaned me their spring compressors. and yes, they were the cheaper kind, and they worked like a charm. I had to compress the rear with the subframe dropped simply because i didnt have a pry bar that worked. i also compressed the front to make it easier to get the struts in/out.

Re: Need help - spring compressors

you can 'rent' spring compressors from auto zone (actually free, but you have to leave a deposit) and do the job yourself. the back is stupid easy. even a beginner could manage this in an afternoon. write up on a4mods i believe.

    A picture is worth....

    Ask Mike@PureMS http://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/979229.phtml

The correct spring compressor, prevents loosening of subframe bolts!

Re: Need help - spring compressors

I did mine by dropping the subframe and used the OEM (autozone) compressors. Pryed them out with a prybar at the end. It worked just fine and I had never changed a set of springs in my life.

i thought the back was easier than the front, they are just screwing around with u because they dont feel like doin the back, i bought autozone compressors for 50 bucks and they worked perfectly.

Re: Need help - spring compressors

It was the hardest springs I have ever done but I did a set on my buddy's a4 and used spring compressor for front which was easy but we did the back with no compressor because the ones I have don't fit. Didn't loosen sub frame. Just elbow grease and pry bar. It was a mother trucker though.
