So I had a fun trip today..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yesterday afternoon I went to North American Motorsports and finally got my Revo flash (been procrastinating forever). So I drive it home (about 30 miles and it pulls fine and no problems).

That night I head out and to a friends house. About 2 miles down the road after the engines heated up I get on it in second gear. Ignition coil failure. No big deal I have a spare in my trunk, 5 min fix and I'm on my way.

This morning I head out to the dealership to pick up another spare coilpack since I don't like driving anywhere without a spare. I get there without a problem with the car pulling and running fine. I go buy the coilpack and talk with the parts guy about how often the fail.

I leave and sure enough two miles down the road i get on it in 3rd gear and my second coilpack fails. I pull over, replace it and head back to the dealership.

Parts guy is like "you didn't get very far huh" haha so I'm like yeah you won't believe this but I just blew a coil pack on my way out. So this time I buy 2 more just in case. I leave the dealership and take it easy on the car for like 10 mins. Second gear to 19 psi and the 3rd coil pack goes. I say F it and replace the remaining two because I'm sure the 4th would've went 10 mins later.

So wtf how do I blow 3 coilpacks in 2 days? Obviously cause of the chip right? But why would that cause them to fail? I haven't had a coilpack failure since I bought it until yesterday? I just thought this was a little weird anyone have any thoughts? I'm scared to open up the throttle now in fear of blowing another $40 (wasn't planning on spending $120 today..)

I've owned my car for 60K miles, and i've only had 1 fail on me. *knock on wood*. ive been chipped for at least 30K miles.... i wonder if its just a hit and miss.... also the ones in my car are not the "R" versions, but the older ones.... my replacement was an R... and havent had any problems yet....

That sucks dude.. I've never had to replace one but I'm going BT soon so do you think I may as well replace them? I'm assuming it's easy to do since they take 5 minutes.

I know this is gonna sound stupid, but as I've been lucky enough to never have blown a coilpack of my own before, how do you know which one it is that's bad? Does it get all black and sooty and just look obviously blown up, or what?

I had very similar situation when I flashed. Lost 2 within a week of APR 1 and another a day after going 1+. I did the same thing and replaced the fourth, and have been good for a couple months now. I carry two extras at all times now. I also upgraded to STI brand, recommended by a local tuner. I couldn't afford to go Hitachi, they're bank.

I guess I just don't understand why a flash would cause the coilpacks to go bad?

As soon as you feel the car rumble, loss of power, and the cel you should pull over. Its not good to be running on 3 cylinders and having one of the injectors dumping fuel into the cat.

Once you're pulled over pop the hood (car still running) and un plug each ignition coil one by one. You can tell which ones are good because the cars idle will sound worse when unplugged and the one that doesn't change the idle is the bad coil. replace and be on your way.

very common my friend i blew 8 in one week, but anyways, when one blows the other one in line receives more stress, and then it fails, and on and on. they always say change them all when one blows.

I wouldn't replace them until needed, but you should definitely keep 4 spares in your trunk just in case. you don't need better coilpacks for a bigger turbo application, theres no difference in ignition quality or anything. However I would recommend the Beru or Hitachi coilpacks (the ones that bolt down to your valve cover). Apparently the reason for coil pack failure is moisture accumulating beneath the seals and "frying" the coil.

My CP failures were more spaced out. I was flashed at 14,500 miles and here's how my CP replacement schedule went:

    08/06 @ 43k miles, cylinders 2 & 4
    12/06 @ 53k miles, cylinder 3
    12/07 @ 80k miles, cylinder 1

Running all revision Rs now. Still keep one in the trunk for a spare.

My car has only blow 1 CP as well, and its been running higher boost over half its life. Replaced all of them with Hitachi E's and don't really worry about it. If it happens it happens, keep some in the trunk.

The Hitachi cost $30 each from Purems which is exactly the same price they list for the stock B6 coils.

Re: So I had a fun trip today..

why is it so hard to understand that the old packs aren't up to the power increase after being used so long. don't cheap out and try to replace just one do all four and you won't have to worry about having to pull over three additional times..... When i had my first flash done (APR stage 1+) i popped a pack about 2 miles from the dealer, he had one pack in stock so we replaced it with that, and the second popped two days later, luckily my 4 new coil packs arrived that day and i haven't had to replace one since (2 years now) but i still keep a set of 4 new ones in the trunk for the day they do decide to die.

replacing all 4 coil packs should be a requirement for anyone that flashes from stock.

^definitely good advice on the receipt

i blew 1 about 3 minutes into ripping on the car right after getting it up and running on the GTRS -- and while limping to an area to replace them and the plugs, i blew 1 more, and a 3rd went in the parking lot right as i rolled in. (it stalled at this point)

stock coils just can't take the heat (literally)

I don't remember where I was looking, but I thought the Hitachi's were a lot more expensive than $30. I'll check that place out. I thougt on ECS they were over $50 a piece, but I could be remembering wrong. I bought some stockers from a member here as back up, and haven't needed a single one since buying them.

I also looked at ECS and at this time they dont even list the coils for the 2000 or 2001+ 1.8t, the only thing they list now is for the AEB and those do cost around $60 each.
