    Roadtrip Question!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok, so my lady and a couple of my buddies wanna go up to Halifax for a weekend. For some crazy reason the airfare is 900+ bucks and we're all like hell naw... So we're thinking about driving.

My car has 66,000 on the odo. How bad of an idea is it to drive 800 miles wtih

    myself 200lbs
    the lady 120lbs
    her best friend 145lbs
    her boy friend ~210lbs

in my AUDI for 14 hours?

Strange and unusuall question but just wondering. I usually never have more than one passenger in the car so just wondering..

You guys have any crazy roadtrip stories? anything i should have done before i go. i just changed the oil, got new brakes.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

800 miles takes you 14hrs? pssshhhh you better step it up!
    (jk)

you should be fine, just take a jug of water - a few quarts of oil - spare coil packs - and some basic tools with you and you should have nothing to worry about.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

900 miles actually... but the route from new york to halifax is screwy, google quotes 14 hours and i probably would need that much time since im with alot of people and they will get tired and cranky. i would do it alot quicker alone.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

Go for it....! In the first couple of months I drove my new Mark II tt roadster to Charleston, S.C., for the 2007 TT-East and had a great time with about 30 other TT aficionados.

66,000 miles for an A4 is nothing. Do as some of the responders say and bring some oil and possibly some ignition coils for an extra measure of confidence. And while you are up in the Canadian Maritimes make sure you drive to Cape Breton and the island. It is supposed to be one of the most scenic drives on our continent.

Also, bring a lot of cameras and shoot some of those lighthouses, lobster boats and seascapes. Have a safe and enjoyable trip and post those photos on here when you return.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

I just finished a 3,000 mile road trip with no problems and I'll be taking a 5,000 mile trip next month. You should be fine, but I'd add an air compressor to the list of emergency supplies.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

i just did 1200 miles with 2 passengers in my A4 that has 130xxx miles on her. She ran great. I got pretty damn good mileage (about 425 miles to the tank) and it was all mountain driving in very hot weather.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

Are you going to take the Ferry from Bar Harbor? If so I can give you route specific tips becuase I lived in Bar Harbor for 3 years.

either way, you are going to have to take 95 up through maine. conserve gas. there are going to be some straight aways where you are going to want to go 150+ ( and it's possible) but the exits and gas stations are few and far between in many places. especially is you are going to drive all the way. once you pass Orono, there is plenty of trees....and thats about it.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

i killed my last K04 beating on it last time i went to Manhattan. 5 hours of passing people and a nice stretch of tossing lead back and forth with an older corvette.

drive it like a normal person and you shouldn't have any problems.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

    Halifax is in Nova Scotia?

Do what Daniel suggested. A jug of water for coolant, a quart or two of oil, spare coil packs and you're set. Check tire pressure before you leave. If you have Vag-Com I'd suggest bringing that and a laptop just in case. I don't go anywhere without mine now-a-days. Mainly as insurance to log and keep an eye on how my new motor is behaving.

Put it this way. I installed new [aftermarket] cams in my new motor last weekend/week. Without more than a 5min drive up and down my road I hoped in and drove 7hrs to northern Maine and back. Car was perfectly fine, even with a partial tune.

With 50miles on my new motor I hoped in and drove down to Pennsylvania for a bike race and back.

What I'm saying is these cars are durable and will last with the proper maintenance.

    Re: Roadtrip Question!!

Hey Dub, I didnt know they had a ferry that i could take, i guess that would be better than driving all the way. I'll look into that, My friend will drive some of the way too so i can nap. We're gonna leave around midnight so i'll be on the first shift while he sleeps then switch. I see that it's gonna be quite a drive through maine... should be some good photo ops...

    Spare kit:

    -- Water
    -- 2-3 CPs
    -- 2 quarts of oil
    -- VAG + laptop
    -- Cellphone

You'll be fine though... and as for the comfort factor, once everyone is settled in they'll feel great. Space is a tad tight but our cars are comfy.

Though it's not in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick isn't far... so I highly recommend Shediac. A beautifully scenic coastal town that's an excellent place to showcase the eastern Canadian Acadian culture. Here's a link. Clicky click Plus it's closer so you could stay there for a night or two (for cheaper too!) before moving along to the pubs and such in Halifax.

Either way, you'll have a great time! May I suggest picking up a Lonely Planet guide book for your trip? It'll help narrow down the array of choices with places to stay and eat, and things to do and see.

    GL, and post photos!

Wow... here in the midwest we don't think twice about 800 miles. If you ask me this is WAY overkill.

Be spontaneous and enjoy yourself. Quit over-thinking it.

Don't forget 2 weeks worth of canned food, 4 heat blankets, athletic tape, bandages, gauze, phone cards, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, shower bag, iron skillet, firelogs, starting fluid, matches, flashlights, extra batteries, cb radio, more batteries, hatchet, 50 sq ft. of blue tarp, roll of twine, and a snow suit.

Oh, and watch out for those evil Canadian pick pockets. You better get one of those chest belt wallets.
