    Paint markings, Stock Sport Springs

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys-

I picked up a Set of OEM Sport shocks and springs to cheaply help eliminate this nasty gap.

I am going to have them installed when I get new tires next month b/c can't seem to find anyone to help me out as I try it myself. My question is about the paint markings on the springs. 2 of them have 2 paint markings, (One Pink and one Blue), and the other 2 have 4 paint markings (3 green and one Blue). The only thing I could dig up while searching was something having to do with Axle weight ratings. Since these came off of an 04 FWd 1.8t, i think I should be fine since mine is an 03. So the NOOB part of my question is which ones go in the front, and which ones go in the back? Thx for the help.

The longer slimmer ones go in the front and the shorter larger ones go in the rear. You can't go wrong, they just won't fit. Read Capt- Obvious DIY and his update. Here's pics from my non sport:

Definately post another side picture for comparison once you do the swap?

Does anyone know if you can buy the OEM sport suspension set-up (shocks, springs) brand new?

I ask how much at the dealer just for fun and it came up to ~$1300 with the bump stops and everything... So I got a used set from shokan's a complete sport suspension with 8000 miles on it for $200. Give them a call if you can't find anything.

yes, I was the one who posted about them on eBay. I saw two postings with brand new Audi sport suspension made by Sachs (who is the supplier) for $500. Didnt know if they were 02 or what though. Just looked again and cant find them anymore.

The long springs fit the front, the short springs fit the back. Also, you need to either use the correct "bump stops" that are used for the sport suspension, or shorten the bump stops from the non sport suspension. Otherwise, the ride will be harsh and the suspension travel to short. The "bump stops" are actually active auxiliary springs, and have an important function working with the main springs. They are not just "bump stops", they are active for most of the travel length.

Crap, I didn't get sport bump stops with the used setup I picked up. Are they very exspensive? How much should be cut off the stock ones to make them functional with the sport set up?

I was quoted C$38 for the fronts and C$64 for the rears....and that's each, so total cost would have been approx C$200. A rip off in my opinion.

I ended up cutting the oem non-sport ones. I cut 3/4" from the rears and 1/2" from the front bump stops. Then I used a bench grinder to "reshape" the ends so that it would fit back inside the boot.

Out of Curiosity, how did it ride after you did this? I have read that the front Bumps don't need to be cut, and the rears should be, but must be cut carfully other wise the ride height would be adversely effected. Did you just cut them down with a hand saw or chop saw? Also, did you cut the excess off of the top or the bottom of the bumper. Thx for the input.

It rides fine. A little stiffer than the non-sport suspension but nothing too harsh.

I was getting conflicting information as to whether the fronts had to be cut or not, so to save myself some work down the line (in case it had to be cut) I just did a 1/4" trim so it wasn't too much of a difference.

I used an utility knife to cut the round end (the end that goes into the lower boot or the bottom of the bumpstop) and then rounded the sharp edges with my bench grinder to as close as the original shape as possible.

Thanks for that link(and zzh & 02Avant), looks like i'd have to give them a call. Not to sure on how I feel about buying suspension from an Audi that was in an accident though i'm going to see how much my local Audi dealer would sell them to me as well. I assume the only OEM suspension worth looking at getting would be the 2002 because that's the only year with the most drastic drop compared to the 03's-05s, correct?
