Best way to make airbox (w/ holes) water resistant?....

Looking to make the airbox water resistant (after punching holes in it). Anyone have any experience w/ pre-filters or other breathable water resistant material that might do the trick?

a good method, after you cut the holes, is to completely cover them in a tarpaulin/plastic material. you want to make sure it is air-tight, or else it won't be water proof.

Waterproof holes. . .that's a new concept I think. We could be onto something monumental here.

hmm dont drive in big puddles while boosting at max. it seems pretty hard for water to make it to the airbox unless your wheel liner is shot.

If you're considering hitting max boost in wet conditions, while utilizing a Darintake, think again brother man. Its not the smartest idea.

How about not doing the darintake in the first place, and hit max boost everywhere and anywhere?

Curious... how would you waterproof a hole without resealing it?

So, basically just don't cut holes, right?

My buddy just suggested Outerwears (designed for dirt bikes) -
    http://www.outerwearsracing.com/faq.html

    From the FAQ page -
Will adding an Outerwears Pre-Filter stop water ingestion? - 11/03/2004
The Outerwears Pre-filter is an excellent solution to prevent water from entering into the engine due to puddles or heavy rainstorms. An Outerwears Pre-Filter is designed to be water repellent and will reduce the risk of water entering through an air intake system. Although our Pre-Filters are proven to be extremely effective in repelling water, please keep in mind they are not water proof. If submerged, your intake can hold or pass water.

    Re: Waterproofing airbox holes?....

I would think that holes in the intake would not make much difference in our setup, even if you encounter water up to the bottom of your airbox. Air will take the path of least resistance, in this case being the snorkel at top of airbox (since pulling air from the grill area would be less resistance than pulling water up through the holes). This is essentially how the "bypass" works for AEM CAIs that put filter behind the foglight area in other cars.

I would also guess that any negligible amount of water that splashes in would be absorbed by the filter.

As others have sort of touched on...you're not going to make a hole waterproof (well, barring some kind of fancy valve).

Umm...no it's not a joke. Outerwears makes filters that let air in, but keep water out. If you get a custom piece made, you can line the inside of your air box to do just that.

It's called a pre-filter. It makes perfect sense. See -

OK, maybe waterproof is not the right word, but you should be able to make it water resistant with the pre-filter material, no?

    Sure - that might work.

I'd say just stay out of window-deep puddles, especially when on the throttle. It's not like you relocated the intake to somewhere below bumper-level (like many jdm CAIs).

Plus isn't a little water-injection good for turboz?

little 'spritzes' of water aren't going to affect anything. Fording a flash flood, can cause problems with a darintake. no pantyhose are going to help you in that situation.
