Deal or Ripoff on Tails?

So basically through a friend of a friend i've been offered what i was told was a "deal". This guy says he well paint the tails gloss translucent black on all the red and leave the clear part unpainted (like the car in the pic below). He claims this paint he uses is $400 or so a gallon and he won't paint my tails for less than $250 and charges most $350. What do you guys think... Personally i think it's high.

p.s. - VHT nightshades = 10 bucks per can or less... model car window tint = even less than that.

Well he originally wanted $200 and i told my friend that he should go lower than that. But he disagreed and got his done anyways. He was too anxious i suppose.

That guy is off his bird, tell him to take his paint and go fuck himself. Good tinted tails should not cost more than $150 max. I paid $50 for mine the same way as above but even darker, but I knew the guy. It doesnt need to be some "prestige black paint". Black is black, you mix some clearcoat with it, attatch it to the spray gun and spray it on. Lol this is not a brain surgery mod. I wouldn't recommend VHT since it comes out too matte, unless you really work with it and get some clearcoat, polishing compound, etc, it could get messy if you do it wrong, then you are out a set of tails. An even better recommendation would be buy the pre-cut film as dark as it comes, it actually looks good like it should if you put it on right. Then take a razor and cut out the white area, and voila ! Plus its not permanent if you dont want it to be.

Any idea of what the clearcoat to paint mix percentage would be? I could mask and spray it myself, i was just worried about screwing it up. Good thing is though, that i have two sets of tails.

okay even if it is 400$ a gallon who the FUCK IS getting close to using a gallon on tail ligths, maybe an ounce tops? BUT IF HE OWNS A SHOP AND PAYS 400$ a gallon he is getting a "free" ounce of weed with each gallon

Hi Garret,

B6 A4 sedan tails cost $85 plus $20 return shipping & handling to tint your lights in standard Stage 2 tint. If you want to leave the clear section untinted, that is an additional $20. I would need around 2 days to complete the work plus shipping time.

The B6 A4 tails are probably the easiest lights to take on and off. They are held in with 1 phillips head screw which is covered by a round carpet piece that matches the trunk matting. When you open the trunk, you will see it on the inside portion of the tail light. You will need a flat head screw driver to take the cap off then the phillips screw driver to remove the screw. The light will then pop out of its 2 tab guides. It's very easy to do.

How did you do them Chris? I used model masters transparant tint spray with model master high gloss. You know, the stuff you use on r/c cars at your local hobby store. They have looked and held up great for years now. Have to redo one though as somehow I got brake fluid on it when my caliper messed up on me in cali and it ate away the paint... Total cost...$20 for 2 cans of transparant, 2 cans of gloss and some very fine grit sand paper Takes some practice getting good at spraying it on even though...

That paint is a PITA, you need to shake the heck out of it and warm it up or it will blotch up and spray unevenly, I used it for my R/C's.

Yes you do. I wish I had a paint shaker lol. The side markers are really easy to do since they are not as big of an area.
