car stalls yesterday while driving... pulled some codes today :
    16396 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)
    P0012 - 35-00 - -
    16726 - Camshaft Pos.Sensor Circ Low Input
    P0342 - 35-00 - -
16486 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circ Low Input
    P0102 - 35-00 - -

the belt is not physically torn and it still has decent tension, but from searching i gather there is no need deny it...

my car currently has 101K on it, do you guys think that the new lawsuit claim we all received will cover the repairs since it is technically still under 105K? should i try to contact AoA directly or a dealer? any advice is greatly appreciated...

can anyone think of ANYTHING else that this can be?

and yes, it should have been changed a while ago, i f*cked up

    thanks guys

its not usually the belt that breaks but the tensioner that breaks. check that bad boy out.

Pull the covers and see if you can check the tensioner. You might have to put it in the service position though.

I prefer the "semi-service" position. take the bumper skin off and the bolts out from the "core support", don't remove it, just slide it forward so you can put two bolts in by the fenders. That clears up at least 4" of extra room. Since you don't need to remove the toothed crank pulley, there's no need to get an impact or anything that big in there.

It's possible that it jumped time. A tooth off on the belt will let it still run, but it'll make very little power.
IIRC the tensioner is part of the class action suit. Are you in the model years covered? 2000-2003? You may be covered, but if it still runs you probably didn't do any serious damage.

Re: i think my timing belt broke

the car's not running and it doesn't start... and yes i think i'm covered by the class action settlement... i just hope audi doesn't try to blame the failure on something else...

When you try start the car does it ''crank'' really fast? Or faster than it would normally sound?

Re: i think my timing belt broke

it doesn't sound as if the engine is turning... i'm not sure if the crank is turning or not but the camshaft is def not... it sounds faster and more high pitched...

did you try to open the top plastic cover and visually inspect the timing belt to see if its loose?

it takes on ly two clips and a pull of the cover

Re: i think my timing belt broke

yeah, it's not completely loose, but i don't know how tight it should be... but it looks like it should be tighter than it is... I would need to take off the front end or put it in the service position to see if the tensioner went but I don't really want to go through that, i'd rather just have Audi inspect it since it's a free check anyway...

Re: i think my timing belt broke

I had a belt go bad on a 1.8t Passat. the teeth on the belt literally fell off but the belt stayed tensioned and the crank would spin but the head wouldn't. If you can turn the key to start it and it sounds like things are spinning but the belt doesn't move the camshaft pully, then you've probably got the same type of belt failure I had.

does it crank on and stays on or it just cranks and stays off.
