    034 motor mounts/tranny installed!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Finally got around to putting in my 034 mounts this weekend.. i did street density motor mounts and track tranny mount.. i did the motor mounts first... not terribly hard but the passenger side isnt the easiest to reach and you dont want your car slightly cooled down (unless you like the smell of your own burning flesh) for some reason i could not get the snub to line up to save my effing life! i finally put on two washers where the snub bracket bolts to the engine to make it fit but it was touching on the drivers side of the snub cup.. the washers moved it just off it....

so i would probably get all track mounts if i did it again.. no real increased vibrrations... but less motor movement for sure...

now the track tranny mount is another story. the install took a little longer and it was tricky to get the mount out from the cross member but not bad...

when i first started the car.. i felt a lot more connected to it a lot more vibrations.. once i got it settled it, they have been reduced quite a bit..... i can still feel a little more through the wheel/shifter but its not annoying or anything.. you feel it most when you first start the car.....

shifter feel is greatly improved with the tranny mount.. all in all a good investment!

on a side note, i also threw in some AutoRX with some good ole dino castrol GTX... im going to take it easy for 2500 miles and let it do its thing... but i dont know if i should/will switch back to full syn for the second rinse phase of autorx or leave dino oil in for that as well? i might email autorx and get their advice

autorx is awesome. When I did my valve cover gasket @ ~60K my mechanic said hes never seen a cleaner 1.8T!!! I did the first oil change with the dino oil and auto Rx. Then ran DINo for a little bit, then switched over to synthetic. There was a post about it if you search...I think Saturine posted it

Papa, do you get an off idle vib? Say if you give it a little rev? I can hear my trans a lot more now too.

I have the track tranny mount too, and at idle, the vibrations feel almost stock-like, but its when you rev it up off idle, like you said, that the vibrations kick in. Keeping coins in the holder, next to the hanbrake, is a big no-no when revving it off idle.

Good stuff.. did your motor mounts start leaking or just decided to change them all out? I thin I may also do the AutoRX when I get back from my deployment.. hmm

slightly... its better today actually... its only bad when first start the car and the RPMs hold 1100 or so.. once they settle down its not bad.... do you have the linkage upgrade from JHM? ill drive it again tonight and check for that trans noise...

my drivers side one popped... so i figured might as well do them all... (although a lot of people upgrade to these 034 solid mounts to reduce shift and engine slop.......

ive gotta figure something else out with this snub.. its way off still, i need a steady lift to get it level i think... may have to break out the forklifts again

im going to have my VVG and cam seal done in a month or two so ill be sure to check and see how clean the top of my engine is... (i sure wished i could have seen it before to gauge the effectiveness of AutoRX

yes, its hitting the drivers side of the cup.. i put two washers on the bracket to push it out where its not touching now but it has like .5" on the passenger side of the cup and .001" on the drivers side (its not centered at all)

there is a few DIYs already but i can do another one..... ill have to lift it back up to take pics

While jacking up the engine, you might have shifted it out of alignment. There is no reason why the snub bracket shouldnt line back up.

I followed this write-up with my street-density engine mounts. This is specific to the rear trans mount. It was also easier for me since my engine & trans were out of the car at the time.

I have no vibrations what-so-ever but I'm also using street density at all locations. Much more noticeable over stock. I really like it.

Yassou Papachristo......I only work for a Greek org. I don't fully speak it, I know enough to get by. I see you finally put in those 034 mounts? I told you, you should've gone with the track mounts all around! It's all good, the vibrations will be gone soon, how did you like the sound inside the cabin when you first installed them?

Yeah. My DM feels great. Guess I haven't experienced 'chatter' so I don't really know what you guys are talking about.

With the pedal out, and out of gear. The noise is from the trans. not the clutch.

    Re: 034 motor mounts/tranny installed!

yes I understand that. Clutch "chatter" at idle is a bad term to use since at idle it's coming from pulsating vibrations in the tranny. It's truely chattering when you load it in very low rpms...

I think that is a much better term to use. I always get corrected when I say "clutch chatter at idle" when I'm around my audi tech friends... form of habit I guess.

The rear mount is easy too, loosen the 2 trans. mount nuts, support the trans, then remove the 6 bolts for the crossmember, this will allow it to move around as it not necessary to remove it, slid the member back and remove the frt. bolts and forward to remove the rear bolt, swap the mount and reinstall.

BASICALLY what dirty said... if you have been under there and messed with it all ( i did my own clutch so it was all too familiar) you will understand pretty easy. i did have to unbolt the exhaust in the middle to get the cross member low enough to get the mount out... ill take some pics this weekend and write up a DIY... i put a new shifter assembly in my lil bros acura rsx-s (he ripped his out pretty much) so im doing a DIY for those guys as well. damn those cars are built so cheap! shifter feels like shit! especially compared to my JHM

Chris, you should not be getting any gear whine in first.

I initially had the same whine, and although is sounded pretty cool, it woul dbe too much.

Most likely your tranny mount is not seated correctly, I would FIRST get that snub mount issue sorted out, that is throwing off the alignment of the engine/trans/driveshaft. Actually that is probably why you are getting that gear whine.

I had the same sound, but it was because my tranny mount was aligned.

You know what's weird? I have the 16lb steel one too, and I didn't have the chatter for months... not until the middle of this summer, and it sounds horrible at idle if the A/C is on.. kind of embarrassing. At first I thought my motor was coming apart, then thought it was the A/C compressor.. glad its just the tranny but geeze.... If I'm just sitting there, I up the throttle a bit to make the noise go away or shut off the A/C.

    Re: 034 motor mounts/tranny installed!

Mine didn't start making noise until about 1000 miles into the new engine might have been not properly balanced or something but was aligned properly. Does the noise go away at idle for you if you press the clutch pedal in?
