I need new tires. Make recommendations Please

My Kumho Ecsta SPT tires on my summer wheels are shot. I'll have to run the numbers but I'm thinking 20,000miles are on them (1.5 summers).

Size: 235/40R18

I rotate them front to back religiously (just about every oil change give or take) and the wear is even across all 4 tire treads. Wear is now down to the wear markers. The littlest bit of rain and I have no traction. They are also very loud and I think out of balance now due to the wear.

As you noticed, I drive a lot. Every tire I've had on this car has only had a life of around 20k (original Dunlops, Kumho all seasons, Kumho summers, etc..). Surprisingly my winter snow tires are wearing the best out of any tire I've had on this car (two winters of a lot of driving and they show very little wear).


What do you recommend for a cheap tire? I don't want to spend more than $130/140 per tire since I'll wear through them quickly.


I posted in the tire forum and Doc@TireRack suggested possibly the BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S. How about Nitto or Falken?

I need to make a decision this week so I can get them mounted and balanced before Labor Day weekend (got another trip then).

Why the Generals? They are a lower speed and weight rating than the Kumhos. I know they are cheap.

I have General Exclaim UHPs on my 19s (235/35/19). Z rated tires. W = max speed of 169 mph. Doubt you would reach that speed. Incredible long tread wear. Have used them for over 1.5 summers (about 30k miles) with plenty of tread remaining. I do rotate them every 5k miles.

They have great handling on dry and wet pavement. They also remain quiet and provide a comfortable ride. It's an incredible tire at a very low price.

Cheap, Khumo SPTs... Medium, Conti Sport Contact 2's... Spendy Michelin Pilot Sport...

Marangoni Mythos are awesome tires on wet and dry, they are quiet and not to much expensive

I have the Falken FK452s and I like them a lot. Great traction wet and dry, the only thing I don't know about is wear. I have never owned a set of any Falkens long enough (this is my 3rd set on 3 different cars) to know how long they actually last. I would recommend Conti SportContacts but idk if that is in your price range.

That's only unique to the 19s. Seems that TireRack is unloading them (only 2 left). The Goodyear F1s are still full price for 18s. I've had them on my 18" RS4 wheels (OEM Ultrasport). They are fantastic tires. Now that I've had the General Exclaim UHP tires (on my 19s), they feel nearly equal to the F1s.

The Generals are my summer tire of choice.

I had KDW2 tires. Wicked tread pattern! They had good handling on dry and wet roads, but the stiffer sidewall caused them to get really noisy in only a short amount of miles. After one summer season, they sounded like I was driving off-road mud tires. If it didn't have the noise issue, I would recommend these as well.

I just bought a pair of Nexxus N3000 for the front of my car from www.edgeracing.com . They were $109/piece for 235/35/19. They have good tire wear and all that stuff. I have had them for a few weeks but they seem pretty good. I read about them from others doing a google search and a few people ran them for many many miles and were happy. I was just driving around in severe rain since im about to get hit by a tropical storm and I had good traction so they are good in the rain as well. They also dont make any road noise so that is good as well. I had Falken FK452 before these and they are just as good.

Those are my next winter tires. My roommate has them on his Golf and swears by them. I scored a set of Blizzak LM25s for $100 a piece (17") so I'm using them until they are shot (maybe the end of this winter, we'll see).

I have the UPS as well. They tend to squeal under hard driving. There good for there price. I've had mine for about 10,000 miles before replacement, all of which I drove lowered without an alignment.

FYI, you can only measure and compare tread wear to the same brands of tires. You can't compare GY, to Dunlop, to General, etc.

I have these on my car, no problems, no road noise, good in the rain. No complaints.

Doug, I ran toyo T1r tires for the last 2 summers and have absolutely loved them. I'd say that they are my favorite summer tire.

I had Nitto 555 I believe. Not sure of the exact name but I'll never buy Nittos again. They sucked. Tread was ok for the first 10k but after that they wore out incredibly fast. And by fast I mean , turning a corner and losing grip in a hurry. I also had a friend that was driving an a4 with the same tires and lost grip on all 4 tires at once and wrecked the car. According to him the tires looked fine. He is a mechanic and the car was quattro. So take that for what it's worth.

I run Kumho SPT tires now and had them for 18k and they are still holding strong for me.

I would get the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position. They grip like crazy in the dry and wet. They are expensive but worth it.

I had toyo proxes4's which are a little out of your price range, but Falken Ziex 912 are the new tire replacing the most popular tire. Waiting on those to come in with my new wheels wednesday, we'll see how they do. But with the toyo's i had incredible control in rain and snow.
