lots of vibrations, snub mount? tune up?

So I just picked up a 2005 1.8tq tip for my wife, love the car, quattro is amazing.

The only problem I have with it is a very annoying vibration pretty much all the time, it's more noticeable idle, but I can feel vibrations through the steering wheel while on the highway and at slower speeds too.

After searching around I thought it could be the snub mount, so I tried to check it out and it looks like it is centered properly, even with the car in D it looks like it is centered properly.

I guess my question is could it be that the mount is too far forward? All the way against the frame/beam where the cup is mounted?

I need to do an oil change in the next 1k miles so I was thinking about doing a full seafoam treatment (gas, oil, intake) to see if that helped.

While running if I put my hand on the engine (black cover on top) it doesn't feel like the engine is shaking any more than my 1.8t in my 2004 gti, my gti just purrs, very smooth. One of the main reasons I got the a4 was my gti.

I took the car on a small trip yesterday (2 hours round trip, 80mph highway) and afterward I had a headache from the interior resonance. I have to do something about this or I just wont want to drive the car.

Please if anyone has suggestions let me know.

    thanks guys.

Loosen up the snub mount. Start the car. Tighten up the snub mount.
    Hope it helps.

Check your motor mounts. If they're leaking purple goo they've failed and need replacing.

Re: lots of vibrations, snub mount? tune up?

I will try the snub adjustment, I was thinking about pulling it off and just starting the engine to see if the vibrations were gone. Not driving the car anywhere but just starting the engine, would this be bad? I assume that the snub is just to keep the engine twisting under shift and high rpm and that I could at least start the engine without breaking anything.

With only 33k miles would the mounts really be bad? I will also check for shot engine mounts anyways though, the vibrations are killing me.

Feels like I'm driving a damn muscle car with 400hp, minus the 400hp :)

I read somewhere here, that the aftermarket snub mount (I'm assuming it is aftermarket, if it is OEM, ignore and inspect) will create more vibration, rather than dampen since it is much stiffer than the OEM. Also, I've read that it will vibrate a whole lot more on auto/tips. It was intended to cure the slop we feel shifting the manual tranny.

Sorry I forgot to mention, but the car is bone stock down the the air filter.

Warranty runs out in december and I think I'm going to go apr 1+, but might go more crazy than that.

I do get some shifting clunks just driving around normally, so I might try to get the apikol (sp?) snub, from searching around people seem to be happy with them.

Intense vibrations is a show stopper though, but I read that if you install it properly its fine.

I installed my apikol snub this weekend and I love it. major difference and tighter shifting. It makes the OEM look like junk in quality and size

Re: lots of vibrations, snub mount? tune up?

HA! I think I found my problem...

I had noticed when I bought the car a few weeks back that the back of the engine block was kinda dirty, but dismissed that as just normal engine dirt.

I was tracing all my vac lines tonight and found one just behind the engine that is completely broken.

Since I'm still under warranty I'm going to take it in tomorrow.

Question, I've been driving like this (vibrations have been present) since I bought the car beginning of July and maybe longer. How bad was this on my engine?

If it is a vacuum leak due to the rupture of a hose, I don't think you need to worry about a long term damage to your motor.

Re: lots of vibrations, snub mount? tune up?

Would it be good to argue for some sort of engine flush?

I don't know how long this pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) hose has been broken and blowing oil all over, I can only assume that some dirt has worked its way into the engine.

Plus if the engine was not getting air from the pcv it would have been running rich all this time from lack of crankcase air it assumes will be part of the intake mixture, that cannot be good on an engine.

I will be out of warranty in December, so I want to take advantage of as much warranty work as possible to prevent any future issues.

any assumptions I make are just guesses, I'm just a computer guy :)

Re: lots of vibrations, snub mount? tune up?

Another vibrations problem victim.. I've had the same problem since I got the car. I;ve searched and searched for solutions but to no success as of yet. I test drove two Tip B6's, both with vibrations at idle. The dealer noticed CEL kicked in. Turned out it was a vacuum hose leak. The dealer covered it but still it vibrated. One Tip owner from this forum said that he tried aftermarket snub mnt but no success; still caused more vibes. He went w/ OE and said he didn't have the problem anymore. So I replaced mine w/ brand new OE snub mount, and still I get vibrations galore. I've heard it may have something to do w/ engine/tranny mounts, which is something I'm looking to do soon...

Apparently this seems to be a common problem on Tip B6's. Let me know if you find something else...
