Radio problem - volume goes up and down?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi, I've had my car for about a week, it has 45K miles and came CPOed...2005 USP...

Regardless, I noticed recently that at low volumes the radio goes up and down in volume intermittently. It happens both on FM and CD, so I don't think it's the station or the song/etc.

At higher volumes it seems fine...

I recall a while ago when I was test driving an A4 (or maybe S4?) I noticed the same with that radio, which leads me to believe it's a more common problem?

Do you guys have any suggestions or have you seen this at all with A4s?

    Thanks!

just a possiblity since noones responded yet....there is an option on the bose(and maybe the symphany..not sure) where you can have it set so the volume will go up as you accelerate (engine noise gets louder when you accelerate). check the easter eggs thread for more info about this. but that may be what youre talking about.

it compensates for the noise the engine makes... believe its called GALA. Its a feature you can turn off. Read your radio manual.

This is what I think it is as well. There is a way to adjust/turn this off. IIRC you hold down Menu on the stereo and the options will pop up. Check the Easter Egg section like Doublezero said because that's where I found out about it.

I looked at the easter egg section but didn't see anything on GALA; maybe I overlooked it?

Also I did a more thorough search and I saw some issues with the wiring that can cause this...

Re: Radio problem - volume goes up and down?

Is yours a problem only at low volumes or at any levels? For now mine is only at low levels, which is not a problem when I'm driving alone but a pain in the A when I have others in the car (and the volume is lower)...

Re: Radio problem - volume goes up and down?

Its a problem with the stock BOSE system, there's a TSB about it. Its due to cabin heat, and The microphone's that pick up noise.

Someone posted a how to a few weeks ago, fixing it, but I have not tried it yet. Its a major suck for me, as it can be 130 plus in my car when I get in it. Hope dejon947 doesnt mind me posting the link!

I had the same problem and none of the tips found in the threads with pushing buttons worked. Did the TSB and it fixed the problem.

Ha! I got the same problem too. Only on low volume, but now that I recall it has been hot here in Cali. Maybe it does have to do with the mic's and heat.

Where is the adapter to fix this? Below the steering column or behind the headunit?

The dealer ought to fix it, since it's a faulty amp problem. Now whether or not they'll replace the whole thing.. that's where you might run into problems with them.

Hey bro, i know its been years since you fixed this problem but i found this thread on google by typing my problem in because i have this same problem with my 2010 A5. I registered here just to write you. So..I turned off GALA and it still happens. Volume going up and down. If i open the windows (weird) and drive for a few minutes it goes away and volume is back to normal. Can you tell me what you had to do? That link to the TSB doesnt work anymore. If you remember i'd be really thankful man.

I wish I could help you out but I honestly don’t recall. That was a long time ago and if I could remember things that well, I’d have very many different convos with my with about my memory.

Id like to see the original TSB on this one as well. The volume issue has been plaguing me for years and I'd really like to know what the official fix for it is.
