    Timing belt tips

I finished my first timing belt/water pump replacement over the weekend on my 02 1.8t. It was not as hard as I thought it would be, just time consuming. Here are a few tips if anyone is going to do this in the near future.

Follow the DIY written up on AZ. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146166

On the old belt (and the new belt), I counted and marked the teeth and sprockets with whiteout. It will make it easier to ensure that your new belt is on correctly.

Make sure you have all the tools BEFORE you start . I was that guy that didn’t, and I had to borrow my wife’s car, haha.

If you have not does so yet, I would recommend ordering an APR/ECS snub mount. My OEM mount was almost gone from dry rot. It’s not a bad upgrade, a little more vibrations, but it cleaned up all the sloppy shifting.

Like the DIY says, just take your time. I did it over the course of three days, mostly because I am in Savannah, Ga. and it was almost 100 deg. Maybe I should have done a FMIC with it as well?

Good advice! Although there is no need to count the teeth. just put one belt on top of the other Clicky click It will also serve to make sure you have the correct belt.

    cheers!
