Pic of my new cone intake

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Figured I'd throw this up since I had the pic on my laptop already. Did it this afternoon it took an hour and a half but thats because I was being really cautious because I didnt know what I would have to be removing, etc. Anyway, once I got the top half of the airbox off I just attatched the 2 K&N filters I got off amazon ($55 total) (connected to the MAF and Secondary Air Intake pipe) and they came with clamps. All you need is a screwdriver, so noobs dont be afraid. The bottom half of the airbox is still on, and that plastic thing on the top to guide some air over that way. I just need a heat shield now. Got the idea/part numbers from This DIY, so I'll obviously give them credit. Ohh yea, I did this purely for the Turbo/BOV sound, and they are LOUD lol. Well, here's the finished result pic.

I know there's plenty of these threads, but still, any questions, feel free to PM me or just reply to this thread.

Re: Pic of my new cone intake

Not to be mean in any way. But the way you have it over your cat and turbo isnt a good idea. They both create a good amount of heat and ur just sucking it back in. Might want at least rough it so it away from them.

Yea I still need a heat shield but the cat isnt right under it as it appears in the picture, its a few feet down, it'll be fine for now.

Mmm no matter how well you think it flows, its just sucking hot air from the turbo and the cat. For sound and loosing power, I dont think its worth it. Just my thought.....

yea what others said... your better off running your stock intake... if you dont care about power and just like the sound then keep it on.

i had a cone filter, at first i liked them. then one day it dawned on me that not only was it not doing anything for me, but it looked cheesy as hell. so i put my stock box in. i picked up one of matt's heat shields...black1.8t or something like that...do a search and im sure his thread will come up.

I have actually ran lower times at the drag strip with this setup....consistenly lower.

For the sound though, I liked it....but I am back on the stock box.

Does any one know, why the stock airbox restricts the DV sound? Can we modify it in a way so we can still here the DV, but retain the factory airbox?

Taking the fabric sound deadener thing out of the inside of the box and using a K&N filter instead of the factory paper one makes it a little louder.

It is a box which acts like a muffler. Drill some holes in it if you want more sound. I saw a DIY a long time ago on doing this.

i did that but i did the swiss cheese mod and drilled holes all over the one side of the box, and a few through the wheel well, and it worked sweet loud as hell, with a k&N of course, but it works the B6 S4 has a vent there as well.

^nope. but it doesnt hurt to try...

& if you "swiss cheese" it, you run the risk of pulling water into your intake...

I couldnt support this decision more. I did it in the past with my B5 A4, and it worked wonders. I really suggest you put your stock box back in and get an after market air filter and swiss cheese the air box. You'll get the "BOV" sound your looking for. As well as the turbo spool whistle/whine. Trust me. It sounds good, and doesnt look cheesy as shit like your current set up.

if you're worried about waterlocking your motor, you shouldn't do any intake modifications. But if you don't give two shits about it, swiss chessing it is the cheapest way to get the noise you want. Or you can just modify your old heat shield and pick up a cone filter from Autozone and stick it in place of your old airbox
