People that have had oil sludge, at what mileage was it discovered?

I'm just curious because I'd heard that if you don't have sludge by say, 50k chances are good that you will never get it. I got my car at 30k , it has 73k now and I've always done changes every 5k with synthetic. I don't have any signs of sludge, I was just wondering

If you did not have sludge by 50K it is not likely you will get it. It was caused by dino oil and a shitty pickup screen.

If you always used synthetic then it is not liley you will get it.

High 70k and no sludge, even missed a oil change in 12k because the dealer said they changed it when I first bought the car. Then when I asked the advisor when was the last time it was changed when I took it in for an oil change after 5k, he told me the last oil change was 12k ago which sucks, but the car runs as good as a newer car should, and my oil is always clean, plus it was clean when I first got the car and I checked my oil very often when I first got it. Its a 05 btw. hope this helps

If you are paranoid, like me, and you just want to sleep happily, get Auto-rx. It will clean the whole engine from all sorts of stuff including sludge. You never know, if you see sludge it might be too late already.

LOL, yes I'm paranoid as hell when it comes to things like this. I may try that. I 've heard of it but I haven't done any reading on it. Is it pretty easy to do?

I remember reading on AudiForums that everyone that owns a 1.8T will eventually get hit by sludge...it's just a matter of time.

Dont wait 10,000 miles to change your oil!

Change it between 3000-5000 miles and oil sludge will never be an issue!

I do mine every 5k with Mobile 1. Since I'm getting up there in mileage , I'm starting to really get paranoid about oil sludge.

Auto-rx is really easy to apply and seems to help the most with engine's sludge. If you search the forums I even started a thread for sludge prevention. I ordered couple auto-rx bottles not long ago, still waiting for delivery. Its supposed to give you better MPG as well. When I think about sludge and Audi refusing to replace the engine, I think about my car being 100 feet under water. Lots of stories about people here who had their engine die and Audi refusing to replace their engines. Am sure a $25 or so Auto-rx treatment will make you feel much better knowing your engine is sludge free.

Check out this and read the FAQ: http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/faqs.htm

you could also try seafoam, but I feel safer going with Auto-rx as its liquid and only 12 ounces.

Never. Only thing that hurts is the wallet but thats no big deal. Synthetic oil changes aren't that expensive and you can find good deals in the stores. I just got 5qts of mobil 1 and a mobil 1 filter for $26.99 @ autozone.

I'm currently going an auto rx cycle. I'm almost done with the flush, next weekend i'll probably change the oil and do the 3,000 mile rinse. Then i'm doing another auto rx flush

The problem is the dealerships, and the warrenty!

Dealerships change your oil @ 10,000 miles, and will hold you too that mark for any and all warrenty claims for sludge!

Just try to get a dealership to change your oil early, and see what they tell you....

I've read posts from people who had the dealerships change their oil every 10,000, then suffer oil sludge, and the dealerships didnt honor the warrenty!

I've read post of dealerships not changing the oil like they were suppose too!

If you change you own oil, you need to keep the reciepts!

Especially if you think you might be going after an oil-sludge claim later on down the road.

You need to be able to "prove" you changed oil, the oil type, and when it was changed! Same thing goes for the oil filter.

Then come the debate with your local dealership.... Some are more receptive than others....

Bottom line, change your oil between 3000-5000 miles(depending where you live and how you drive) with an oil on the Audi approved list, and
you should never suffer any oil related issue. Unless you bougt your Audi used, and do not know the history of the vehicle. Which you may want to
Auto-Rx the engine, then begin the 3000-5000 mile change interval.
