DIY Blackout Grill or Black Matte Grill

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did my grill up like on a4 mods. I washed my car today and just noticed that the DIY grill is peeling. I used almost a whole can of the rubber stuff when doing it. Is it my own fault for washing it, rubbing etc? Now that I have usp front should I just buy a black quattro grill or redo the current one. Could it be possible I didn't sand enought - used 100 grit?

    Ideas, Suggestions, Other?

After sanding it did you clean it thoroughly?

be gentle to it. its fragile stuff.
you can peel all of it off in 2 minutes. then respray.
i take them off from time to time to spray locally where it peels.

yeah I cleaned it really well. Washed it in the sink with gentle soap. I was clean. My coats took place over like 2 days or so. I guess I can respray pretty cheap in the mean time. I just dont want to have to do this every couple weeks or so. Its totally ok for the meantime, but am I messing up or if I want it to last for the long haul should i but a blacked out grill..?

My lower is the same, but I dont hit it because I think I fu$ked this one up by hitting during hood washing.

it only takes me about a half an hour to spray the grille.
i wait about 1-2 minutes between each coat.
do a good amount of them. (around 10 medium coats)
let dry for another 30-60 minutes
when i say "gentle" i mean avoid accidentally hitting it with a hard object. etc. after its dried.

i havent resprayed my top grille for a year. and its still perfect.
but i resprayed my lower once. it only had one or two micro rock chips.
im OCD though and i hardly drive it.

The most important parts of the process are to make sure that you sand ALL of the chrome finshe on the grill until it is dull (gives the plastidip a surface to adhere to and then to clean the entire trim ring with laquer thinner and let air dry thoroughly.

Use many light coats in favor of heavy coats and it will turn out wonderfully.

And don't use a whole can, the thicker it is the more likely it'll peel. 2-3 light coats should do it.

if you're sure that you want it black then just prime it and spray it black. thats what i did to mine and it came out a lot better.

Im getting sick of redoing plastic dip. Did it today and it looks sweet, but I should just pony up and buy the damn 88 dollar grill...

i used flat black paint on all of my grills and its been over 6 monthes, washed many of times, been thru a drive thru wash or 2 and no peeling or chipping at all. also did my mirror caps, the under trunk trim piece as well, and its all still intact...
