Rewrapping door armrest inserts... whos done it?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So on my door armrest inserts, the leatherette has come un-glued from the card, and now it is all bubbly. I am considering re-wrapping them, maybe alcantara. I know a couple of people have done it, but couldn't find anything searching.

Also, I pulled off the inside of the door, and that insert is heat-welded in. Once I take that off, what are you guys using to re-attach it? TIA

Once you cut off all the plastic heads carefully so that you leave enough of the stem so that when you put the insert back on you have something to grab onto. I have not put mine back on yet but I was going to use either epoxy or plastic weld. I do not suggest hot glue as I think it will break off if you put enough pressure on the armrest.

My CF center armrest was hot glued on and it came off so I used epoxy and I don't think it will ever come off again .....

As far as what material to use, that is a matter of personal choice.

I was considering making a mold off of mine and making a new set out of fiberglass.
That way instead of the fabric material being there I could make it a high gloss black, like a piano black or something like that.

Plaid? Interesting choice and unique. Looking forward to seeing that. I also would like to redo the cloth inserts to my A4 so I'll be monitoring this post.

The blue tweed looks great. Ultrasuede makes for easy clean-up and looks good. You guys need to write up a how to for changing panel fabric with pics. Hint Hint...

no I haven't. I just ordered some swatches from ultrasuede.com to see if I can get a match on my alcantara shift boot. Then once I find the exact color name and number I'm planning on going through the link I posted.

I was somewhat worried about sun and rubbing. Have you had any luck with another material?

Are you sure your talking about real Ultrasuede and not regular Suede? They use Ultrasuede in high end luxury yachts because it's water & stain resistant. Resistant to fraying, pilling, stretching, and shrinking.

Cool Re: Rewrapping door armrest inserts... whos done it?

Any updates on changing fabric inserts? Trying to decide if I want to tackle this or have a guy that does headliners do it for me.

Just did my door cards in black micro suede yesterday...was a little bit of a pain to get the card apart to re-wrap it but not unbearable. I used super 77 to glue the new fabric on over the old, seems like it sticks pretty well, time will tell. To secure the card back together i used plastic specific epoxy. Any more questions PM and ill try and answer them.

and the picture are where? The only thing I am worried about with micro suede is durability. It doesn;t seem very wear-resistant

I'm doing that this weekend. I've got one of Mike's door panels in the back of my car and want to grab the other front and maybe the rears today. If I had help then it would be very easy to do all four. We're running the Cobra at Grattan Saturday so it would probably be tonight or Sunday. Some of those super secret details we discussed will probably get worked into the mix.

I'm going to stop by the hobby shop and see if the spray on mask would work well. I could spray that on the face and get a much more consistent thickness and better finish in a fraction of the time compared to taping or tin foil.
