    dual mass flywheel resurfacing?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well basically heres the run down:

i need a clutch shortly. i was going to get a LW spec steel flywheel but read about vibrations with the 6spds. so i decided fine, ill just resurface my stock FW and save a good chunk of $$(thinking about it, this is my best option). talking to a guy in my club, who owns and operates his own audi/vw shop and is an apr dealer, i was told the dual mass FWs arnt meant to be resurfaced even though some people do it. he also thinks the 73k ive got is too much for the FW to be resurfaced anyway. i just wanted to get some input from the guys who have done it before/own the cars. thanks!

also, if anyone has an old FW (stock or LW) that they have resurfaced and are trying to sell...let me know how much youre looking to get for it. ide like to keep all options open here. thanks again!

    Re: dual mass flywheel resurfacing?

SouthBend resurfaced my OEM dual-mass flywheel, and did a fine job!

There is an inspection process done before hand, to determine if the dual-mass flywheel is good or bad, prior to resurfacing....

what mike said... they will check it out... southbend resurfaced mine at 80k and said it turned out great! ive put many miles and lauches on it without any trouble...

i do know that only certain shops CAN resurface DM flywheels... it takes a special machine

    Does it?

I just thought, places, like southbend, were just "gerry-rigging" up a way to lock down the dualmass flywheel, so it wont move while it is on a lathe. Not that it bothers me....what works, works.

OP, I had 95K miles on my stock flywheel, when I had it resurfaced.

Southbend resurfaced my DMFW at 45K miles and it works great so far. You do need a special machine to do it though, and because of this a lot of people will tell you it can't be done...ie Audi dealerships!

    Re: dual mass flywheel resurfacing?

maybe it just takes a little common sense (locking down the DM flywheel) like sami said...

that would clearly explain why audi dealerships cant do it

    Re: dual mass flywheel resurfacing?

Dealerships seem to lean toward replacement, probably because they dont have the means to properly inspect and resurface....

More of CYA(cover-your-arse) to replace, than run the risk of a botched resurface job, on a hile-mileage FW.

    Re: dual mass flywheel resurfacing?

well ill see how much a new FW will be. my company owns an audi dealer so ill get employee pricing on it...probably still more than i want to pay though. hoping i can buy a previously resurfaced one for cheap.
