    Windshield Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems my windshield spontaneously cracked while I was at work yesterday. It was fine when I parked in the morning, when I came out in the evening there was a pretty big crack. But there's no shatter/impact location, so it seems it just failed on its own.

Any ideas whether this would be covered under warranty (since it's not due to a flying rock or being attacked with a baseball bat, etc.), and if not how much I might expect to pay to replace it?

Call your insurance company. I had a rock chip last week and my insurance is replacing it with a new OEM windshield with $0 deductable. Good Luck.

make sure u get OEM glass, other windshield glass might not have the same greenish tint in it. (I'm sure it would bug some of us).

    Re: Windshield Replacement

these days... glass companies get the same windows from the same companies, but because they chop off that it's OEM or Audi part, they get to sell it at a lower cost.

I forgot to add that you might as well get OEM which might only cost your 20-50 bucks more.

When i had my b6, I bought a non-OEM windshield and the entire bottom of the windshield had a 3 inch section that was really distorted.

I would go OEM just to be safe.

    Re: Windshield Replacement

like sdjeff said, I had a B5 that had to have a windsheild replaced and the glass they tried to put in didn't fit right. they tried again with a different piece and same issue. they then had to order a OEM piece for it! just go OEM and save your self the headache. Oh and I don't know but if you have rainsensors you might want to let the glass company know so that doesn't get messed up!

    Re: Windshield Replacement

Well, I'm gonna take it in to the dealership in a couple days, they said they'll take a look and see if it's under warranty.

If not, I'll probably try to get the OEM windshield from a third party.

    Re: Windshield Replacement

either way... don't get it fixed at the dealership... they rip off... depending on the OEM glass... install should cost no more than 200 bucks.

    Re: Windshield Replacement

If you do go 3rd party, GET OEM GLASS! If something happens that could be covered under warranty and the glass isn't OEM, then the dealer won't cover it.

What could happen with the glass that the dealer would not cover, other than the thing breaking again? A new break would not ever be covered under warranty. Why worry about warranty in a glass situation?

The dealer can not void out your warranty for an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the part was what caused the defect. If you put in aftermarket glass and your radio breaks they can't come back and say "sorry, you put in non oe parts, your warranty is gone." There is legislation to prevent us from such b.s. Google the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Also, the vast majority of glass repair shops can get the O.E. glass, same as what is stock at a cheaper price as an "aftermarket" part. The only difference is that it does not have the four rings. I just got mine done this morning. Both my O.E. glass and replacement glass are made by Saint Gobain.

    Re: Windshield Replacement

Well, it turned out there was about a 1mm rock chip that started it, so no warranty coverage and a quote of $525 to replace.

    Re: Windshield Replacement

I have GEICO. They say they'll waive the deductible to repair, but not to replace. Unfortunately, this is a large crack right in front of the driver.

    Getting mine replaced today!

Have a $250 deductible though. Unfortunately not all US states require insurance companies to waive that for windshield replacement.

insurance should cover it, after the deductible of course. if the chip is small, they can touch it up with some uv process for about 50 bucks.

    It's been said...but

    OEM Glass

I dealt with this when I got my car...if you have the rain sensing wipers, they dont work without it. Make sure that when it is replace the little eye behind your rear view is also adjusted properly to work with that function. It affects your auto headlights as well
