I know theres greek threads, but this is more specifically about Pi Kappa Alpha. I'm a freshman at Florida Tech and was hanging out with a kid who turned out to be a Pike, and said I should rush. I was initially against joining a frat but I figure as long as I keep my school work in check it shouldn't be a problem. Dues are $300 a semester, which is more of a question of "do I want to pay to hang out with these people?" more than "can I afford it?". I don't think its money in their pocket, which makes it ok. It'll go towards the cook outs, foam parties, that kinda thing.

So do we have any Pi Kappa brothers in here?

at my school, we called the Pike's Pi Kappa Everyone b/c they all wore similar clothes and baseball caps...it was hard to tell one from another. I am a Phi Sig. I'm sure there are plenty of schools where the Phi Sigs have their stigmas.

The $300 doesn't go to anyone's pocket. It goes to run the machine that is a fraternity house...shit's expensive.

I say check out the brothers, learn about 'what makes a Pike a Pike' and decide if it's the right place for you.

Im in Lambda Chi and couldnt be happier with my choice to go greek.
$300 a semester isn't that bad either, the expenses for a fraternity are huge

and like $4c@b said, check out the other houses, you can find cool guys in any house. try to find where you fit the best

not only is it a good social interaction, but it also provides other professional doors to be opened after graduation.
you can hold offices within the frat and other greek committee positions which look good on a job resume.
beleive it or not they also serve a philanthropy purpose as well.
and at my school, they had extensive old test files that were very helpful.

We will see my friend. This is the year, its all his recruits and we have some good new ones for this year. We do well the first half of the season and then just trip on our own feet At least tailgates are awesome

Frat partys are gay. Ive been to quite a few at different schools and they're all a bunch of bros getting stuck up sluts drunk (dont get me wrong, the girls are bangin). Every dude wheres abercrombie/hollister/[insert gay brand here] and they all drink Natty lite. Fuck paying a fee and being a bitch for a bunch of bro'd out pussys just to party.

Now sorority partys, i'd go to one of those in a hot second.

If you wore abercrombie or hollister to our house you wouldnt get a bid. Im sorry you had a bad run in with a fraternity and now you are the super cool gdi that claims he doesnt need to pay for his friends. My dues pay for parties that you wont ever be able to attend, sure you might get one or two good ones in the semester but we do it all the time.

I just feel sorry for you that you wont ever experience the bond that we have with our fellow brothers or sisters.

i have friends from other houses that we hang out with all the time and will come to our parties.

My take on Fraternities...

Most frat guys that I have ran into are pretty nice, but there are quite a few different "frats" and each house differs. I find the business ones to be rather helpful because it gives you better connection in the business world, however the ones that are "party" frats, and only requires you to get a 1.5-2.0 to be eligible to stay in the house. I find pretty much useless because its not beneficial or barely beneficial in anyway. Who the heck pays for brotherhood? I will never understand.

you pay to be a part of an organization, like a social club or a golf club. it costs a lot of money to properly run a fraternity house.

that's the thing about organized groups. the people in them love them. the people who are not, hate them.
greek life may not be for everyone, which is fine, but you can't make assumptions about something you don't know about.
many times it's a great opportunity to attend a huge university while still having a smaller circle. it makes school not so intimidating.

I was Lambda Chi but really its not about the frat its about the chapter.
Each school is different and every like generation is different. Pi Kappa might be great at one school in one decade while the Theta Deltas or whatever are the sh!t to be in somewhere or sometime else.

i'm not in a fraternity. i rushed, i decided it wasn't for me. it was worth the time to do it.

don't listen to anyone on here telling you that fraternities are gay and to not rush. Don't listen to anyone who lists them as stereotypes. Doesn't matter what they think. If you rush and you decide you like what they're about, then join it. it's not up to a bunch of haters on the internet.

Lambda Chi Alpha has over 300 chapters around the US. Quarter million strong. Theres gonna be some trouble here and there. Every NIC fraternity has been in some sh!t at some time or another. Rapes, date rapes, underage crap and yeah drugs. Its college yo. Sh!t goes on whether you want to see it or not its there. In the end, what counts is you and your friends and you have to look out for the house and membership.

I am still close with most of my brothers to this day and know I can count on them to back me up even now. What more can you ask?
